Project Information

I've been meaning to make one of these for a while now, and last month's Wood magazine had it as a project, so I finally got around to it.

Bubinga and curly maple sap wood with some maple and rosewood (I think) veneer for the racing stripes, it's about 9" long. I had an old Buck Bro's block plane blade that I spent the better part of 2 hours flattening and sharpening using adhesive-backed sandpaper on plate glass. Not counting the blade sharpening, the plane took about two hours to build.

Although I'm not much of a hand plane user, it was a fun project, seems to work fairly well, and it looks beautiful.

Thanks for looking.

Looks great! And looks a lot like mine! LOL I guess it should since I used the same Wood Magazine article and plans to build mine.

haha…funny thing that you just posted this project. i just bought that issue and am thinking about making it too. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being good, how well would you say it works?

I'd say it works well. I'm not very experienced with handplanes, and I'm having a bit of difficulty getting it adjusted properly. When I tap it from the front or rear to adjust the iron, I seem to knock it loose. Perhaps I should have avoided waxing the cap? Or maybe I'm not setting the cap hard enough?

And while I do intend to use it occasionally, I looks really nice on my workbench!
