Project Information

Trying to mail my dog cross country and I couldn't believe the cost of crates, so I decided to build my own out of pine. I made little food and water compartments where Marley can have access to while she is shipped I just need to find a way so the food and water doesn't spill during the mailing process. The top of the crate has lots of room for postage stamps and straps to secure Marley for her two week journey and right now I am tryng to decide if 3/8 or 1/2 inch air holes would be be adequate.

Riiiiight…..A Chest which is being donated to our Humane Society fundraiser. It is made out of Beetle Killed Lodgepole Pine from Idaho.

People like handcrafted items at fundraisers, so I encourage all you woodworkers to donate to your favorite charity fundraiser. Gives you a great excuse to buy that new powertool that you have been eyeing.

Size is 24L 20W 18H

I'm glad you were kidding, because I was about to ask you what the diameter of the air molecules were in your area… or Oh, you give your dog the licorice bison treats, too !

I was thinking one of those big, padded envelopes would be a lot easier. :)

Really nice chest, though. Marley seems to think so too.

I'd go no larger than 1/4", lest you create weak points in the crate's structure. Also, have you considered putting them on the bottom only? It's much more aestetically pleasing. ;)

Nice donation, and nice dog. He looks like one of the happiest dogs I've seen in ages. :)

Anything larger than 1/4" and the dog will be able to start chewing on the sides I think. Have tried a really large hamster water bottle?

Nice box.

If your gonna ship that pup, don't forget a reading light. She's gonna need something to do while traveling. And if you're gonna put air hole in, one of them ought to be a treat hole so people can feed her along the way!

Nice wood Beautifu job!

Thanks for all the comments. I like using lodgepole pine, I hike in large areas of it and I am amazed on how large areas of these trees are dead or dying or simply blown down in large swaths. What I really like are the older trees with wide trunks that one can get some decent lumber from. And the wild streaks of blue are a bonus in the lumber.

Yes another project to be donated for a silent auction. I usually throw chocolates in the bins and a bottle of wine in the tray to entice the bidders.

Nice one!

Judging by the number of views compared to other items you 'got' a lot!

Oh! Yes, a very smart chest.
