Project Information

This is a board I was commissioned to make to replace an under the counter slide out style cutting board. The person I was building the board for had seen a few other cutting boards I had made and liked Purple heart. So I decided to make bread board ends out of Purple heart and then make the rest of the board predominately Maple with Purple heart and walnut (1) stripes. I dont do to many boards under 1 1/2" thick (I love the Butcher Block style boards) and I was a little worried about it warping being so thin so I thought the bread board ends in conjunction with over 20 separate lamination's in the piece would help keep it flat…plus the purple heart side grain will look so much better than end grain sticking out of the cabinet.
Here is the initial glue up..

And the finished product..

I used Tight bond 3 and it is finished in a mix of Mineral oil and bees wax. I think it came out nice and I am sure the future owner will love it!

The board is beautiful Dave. Do you have any concerns with expansion and contraction with the breadboard ends?

I think your placing the thin strips mske the design. Great idea of adding breadboard ends with the face board maple. I just bought a piece of sunken cypress and may borrow that idea to keep the beautiful face grain from bowing. Nice job!

Thanks everyone! Bruce I got allot of feedback on that subject, both ways. I thought about doing it classic breadboard style with the elongated dowel holes…but I didn't like the idea of having a gap between the breadboard ends and the main board. I have made dozens of cutting boards, and they never move..I did a huge 2 inch thick board for my sister in law made of maple and walnut, with a finger jointed walnut frame around the whole board….all glued together. I just saw it last Christmas, and besides the burn marks from the hot pans she put on it, and the slight warp in it from her leaving it wet and placing it flat on a counter-top 27/7, nothing has moved and the finger joints in the frame are tight! Not bad for a 5 year old board that gets used and abused! So I don't know for sure..but I am pretty confidant that it will stay together! Besides..I dont think Purpleheart moves much…

I looked at your boards after you blogged mine, nice LOOKING stuff. I like purple heart too. I used it end grain on 2 boards and also found it less exciting in the end-grain.
