Project Information

I have not posted anything in awhile,I have been in Kentucky with my dad, who has a brain tumor and has had to go thru alot of treatment and things to try and shrink it. God has been with him and my family to help us thru it. In my time while helping taking care of him, I found a little free time to do a few projects here and there.this ring is a ring I had thought alot about how to do it, I am pretty pleased with the end result. It is Bocote and Brass with CA glue as the finish. It is done the same way as my others (DREMEL TOOL)no lathe, the brass is laminated in between 2 pieces of Bocote and then made into a ring. My pictures are not the best and they do not do it justice! It looks really nice in person. I am not sure how thick the Brass is I got it at hobby lobby, I have a few more of these already glued up and just waiting to get at them. Thanks for looking and any comments. Robert

Happy to know that your dad is doing better. Good design on your ring. I like that the brass strip is off center. How did you glue the lamination together?

Very nice ring! Did you use a flat sheet of brass between the 2 piece of wood? If so, then the brass would show on the inside. I could not see it from the photo. the contrast of the dark wood and brass really stands out.

Anyway great product. I may have to borrow your process when I make some more rings

Great combo of colors/medium with the use of the brass. Great job on the ring.

Oh No!! ANOTHER thing I might have to try!

Keep up the great work.

Scrappy

Thanks for the nice comments about my dad and the ring.
KayBee, I normally use gorrila glue to laminate them together although I did use gorrila glue on this one, after I cleaned most of the gorrila glue off I made sure to use a heavy dose of CA glue (Super Glue) also! I was scared that it would not stick to the brass as well as the wood. I liked they way it looks with the brass off center.
Jorge Velez, I still have not got around to making a blog on the process. I really just glue small pieces of wood together (Laminate them) Kinda like plywood, make sure to have the grain of the wood run in different directions. Use any color of wood you like Dark, light, Dark or Light,Dark,Light. I have found that three or more pieces are strongest.
After I let the glue dry I cut them like a stop sign, I then use my Dremel tool to make it round, you could use any way to make it round this just how I do it. I then drill out a hole in the center and start to make it the size I want.
If you look at the comment sections on my other ring projects I have tried to answer question on how to make them, I also on another one of my ring projects I left a link to Franlads Blog about how to do these type of laminated rings. just check out my other ring projects and scroll thru the comments and check out his blog. He is really good as well as many others on here at making rings. Scrappy, Franklad, Junji, Yorkshire Stewart are a few that make rings I hope this helps if you need more info just PM me and I'll do my best to give you a hand.

Thankyou all for looking!

Thank you Scrappy, yeah my dad is doing a little better.
I have been doing some things with the wood you gave me, but I love it so much I don't want to use it:)
I have used that really thin glued up wood from you,I glued it up to make a ring but I am tring to come up with something a little different than your ring.I hope I get it done before long so I can post it, at my Dads I have no internet, no cell phone strength and no long distance he lives in a Holler and does not like any new fangled stuff like internet.:( I laugh but it is the truth. Thanks again Scrappy, I cannot wait to see yours, Robert

I keep staring at this. how do you orient the grain so the thing does not crack over time, or is that what the brass is for? I think I understand the you orient the grain at 90's on the lamination to increase the strength…right?
