Project Information

Last fall before leaving for Florida, where we winter in Punta Gorda. I was on the "OregonBurl" site, Greg is one of my buddies here at LJ. I ordered a small package of misc. burls from Greg from which I made this orniment and base, the finials were from my stash, Black Walnut burl that my father gave me years ago. The pieces from Oregon burl were small so couldn't make anything huge, so I decided to make what you see. The Orniment is 3 1/2" in dia and 9" tall and the base is 4 3/4" in dia. This piece is to large for a Christmas tree but I think it makes a nice decorative piece sitting on a end table. The finish was 3 coats of Tung Oil, and 3 coats of gloss Poly then of course buffed on the Beal buffers. I am not happy with how the brass rod looks but don't know what else to do… The orniment is hollowed to 1/4" wall but is still heavy for the 3/32" rod. Greg at Oregon Burls is great to work with and if you haven't tried him I suggest that you do.

Very nice, Chuck.
I will have to check out Greg's material - he gave you some really nice stuff to work with. The walnut looks good, too.

Wow, I like that. Christmas ornaments are on my to do list when I get back to the lathe in a few days. Several turners in our turning club make ornaments similar to yours and this one is equal to any I've seen. Great Job.

Wow Chuck this is very nice indeed, some realy lovely detail in the finials to compliment that Burl.
Forget the Christmastree man, you can't hide this away for 11 months of the year
As far as the brass rod goes, look OK by me but I am sure if you study it long enough something will take your fancy
