well im only 19, been doing a little wood working from time to time, no training what so ever, just me in the basement trying new things, mostly for presents for others, it all started cause i was a kid and had no money to buy people stuff and now i just love doing it and the things people make are often better and built with love
i often build with pine, my uncle owns and operates norwood and sons logging in northfield ma and i get free rough saw pine from him, i believe that pine and even knotty pine can look just as good as hardwoods, plus for me its free, i do also like to use dark accenting exotic woods
i work as a machinist at starretts in athol ma in the special gage department after graduating from franklin county technical school what i do is make gages for large companies like GE, pratt and withney, caterpiller, IDD and tons more smaller companies. we mostly make gages that measure airplane engine parts and such but anything that cant be measured with a regular tool, we make something custom to only measure on dimension on one part. thats the link to there site and some of the gage styles we often make

i have learned a ton working there that have helped me with all sorts of things. i have to be able to see flaws in the designs before i begin working on them and be able to see how the project is going to come together in the end. that has helped me be able to design my own wood projects at home and see them come to life

Colby, a belated welcome. After seeing some of your projects I have to say that you certainly belong and I, for one look forward to learning a lot from you. Please consider blogging some of your more unusual or complicated projects, preferably right from the design stage. Don’t be reluctant to ask questions, we all learn from one another.
