Countdown to.... (the prototype)

Ok so this is a quick glance at how my (and sometimes my wife’s mind works)... We were looking at the clearance halloween merchandise and I bought a countdown timer to use next year.

When we got home we were talking about the timer and if there might be other uses for it. We are taking a vacation in the upcoming months and thought it would be cool if we could count down for it to help get our daughter excited. Decided to make a new timer using the halloween one. But kept talking about possibilty of changing it for different uses. So first I took it apart…

The decided to use some of the chalk board paint and scrap MDF I had around. It came out looking like this.

and now we can just program it to count down to the next big event.

We like the idea and I know I can make a new one to look even better. May be making a few in the future. Let me know any thoughts and if anyone happens to know where I could pick up more of the countdown timers cheaply..

Thanks All.
CtL

Workshop #10: Bandsaw works great!!

So in my last blog I noted that I have added a bandsaw to my arsenal of tools. It was a great deal and needed a new blade and some quick cleaning up. Well I went and got a blade yesterday and cleaned up the saw and installed the new blade today. Then I just played around a bit. Here are the two projects I did in order to play around some and get familiar with the tool. I decided I would just post them here and not as an actual project, maybe I’ll have something by the end of the weekend to post.

A puzzle, just wanted to play with making different shapes. The bottom is just a piece of scrap pegboard glued on. I got bored later and colored in the pieces using highlighters that were sitting my desk.

This is a box similiar to the anniversary box made but I took a thin piece off of each end and then cut out the middle before gluing the bottom back on and drilling a hinge hole for the lid. I really am looking forward to trying my hand at a real bandsaw box at some point soon.

Both of these were of course made from 2×4 scrap. I had fun and am looking forward to much more soon.

Happy Halloween to you all and thanks for looking.

Workshop #9: A New Addition!

Well I have been watching Craigslist almost daily in order to find a bandsaw. Last night I did and sent a message quick to the seller. Went to look at it this morning and bought it. At under $100 it looked to be in great shape and runs good.

Older Sears/Craftsman model with tilting head. Has the fence and miter gauge as well as some nice casters and I was able to find the manual online for it. I plan to do a bit of tuning up on it in the next month or so and can hopefully put it to work working on Christmas Gifts.

The only real downside I see is that it is a little bit bigger then I expected it to be so I will have to work around it for a bit until I can reconfigure the shop yet again :).

More later.

A Preview of something different for me

Ok, So this coming week I will be married for 5 years (how time flies). It just happens that the traditional gift for a 5th anniversary is wood (How lucky!). I wanted to do something a little different and beyond what I have done before. After looking at various ideas on the web for small boxes to put something else in.. I found RunnerDucks small keepsake box.
I thought this was a great idea and would hold the other gift well. So I decided to first make a prototype out of what else.. a 2×4 scrap. I used the general idea but adapted things as needed. I was so happy with where it was going that I went to WoodCraft and bought a few really nice turning blocks of exotics to make into the final box.

Here is a small run down of how I did the box ( I documented the final box a little better in pics but I’ll post that one next weekend more then likely)

First I actually cut the lid form the block and not having a bandsaw I used a miter box.
Then used a forstner bit to drill out the actual box.
Taped the two pieces to gether so I could line up the dowel hole using my drill press.

Then glued a 1/4” dowel into the lid as noted in the directions.

After drying time and trimming and sanding decided to actually finish the 2×4 box completely

One thing I decided to try that is differnt is to flock the interior of the box rather then just ptting felt in it. So I went back to WoodCraft and got some information, tips and supplies

I just finished the flocking of the piece a few minutes ago so it is still drying but I like how it looks at the moment, so much so I went ahead and flocked the final piece as well.

So the pieces should be dry in sometime tomorrow morning and I look forward to seeing how they turn out. I will post more anout the final piece later on as I mentioned. I really liked making them and they did not take a very long time I Still have several pieces of the wood and plan to make a few more.. hmm perhaps some Christmas gifts are in order. :)

Thanks all
CtL

btw.. sorry about the pics need to figure out what service I am going to use going forward Flickr is telling me my account is full and I do not liek what PhotoBucket is offering.

Office #4: Dimensional Furniture #3

I know it has been almost a month but it has been a busy one.. with a little time here and there I was able to finish the base desk.

I put the last coat of poly on it last night and was able to move it in to the office this afternoon and get that temporary desk moved out of the way. I will be taking it apart and recycling it into new furniture for DW new sewing room.

The new desk fit in place great and I am now working on figuring out the next step which will more then likely be my hutch, then bookcases, then.. got a lot more furniture to build. I do like the way it turned out though. Looking at this pic I realize I need to go find those cable managers I have laying around here somewhere.

For those that may have not seen my previous entries:
The desk is 48” x 24” amd made entirely of dimensional lumber bought at the two big box stores. I ripped the 2×4s in order to make it a little less chunky. All joints are Kreg.
The finish is a is by General Finishes (available from Woodcraft) Antique Oak color. This was a recomenned stain from one of the guys at Woodcraft since it is waterbased but is almost gel like. I just used two coats of a semi-gloss minwax poly to finish the piece.

Looking forward to the next pieces.

Office #3: Dimensional Furniture #2

Well I was able to work much of the day yesterday and today on my desk. Yesterday got stuff cut down and prepared for assembly. did some part sanding. I decided to use miter cuts for the legs similiar to my assembly tables in my shop. I like the look better then butt joints. To cut the miters I used a great miter jig I picked up at a yardsale last year for $5, best dang $5 I have spent in a long time.

Of course like almost all of my projects I used the Kreg Jig. I do like it maybe a little too much, I do plan to work on some other joints in the future. This morning then I was able to quickly assemble the legs and get some sanding done before cutting the stretchers. I plugged up all the kreg holes left them to dry.

While I went out to look at finish ideas. The guy at Woodcraft was very helpful, I decided on a “General Finishes” Espresso colored stain. He said it should do a good job on the pine since it is actually a little heavier, even pulled out an open can in the workshop to give me a better idea of the look.

So anyway one I got home i was able to trim the plugs and dryfit the top, so my wife could see that I did do something on my days off.

More sanding and prep as well as the hutch to do. I will staina sample piece to se how it comes out tomorrow morning.

Office #2: Dimensional Furniture

Some of you may have seen previous posts about my office and basement. It is now finished off mostly, still needs some trim work and a ceiling but that is an expense we decided to wait on right now.
But anywho, this blog series is about me building my office furniture. I decided that I needed a decent desk with hutch and some bookcases to start in order to house my good size collection of books. Due to cost constraints I have decided to attempt to build the office suite of dimensioned pine from the two neighborhood box stores. I have found that the blue one carries better lumber so I started there with about half a dozen of their top-choice studs.

I was able to rip these in half in order to give me more wood for the money and also to have a little bit less bulky frame work.

As is usually the case with my projects the idea is all in my head and I have a very rough sketch of what I am doing as far as measurements go. I prefer more to work from the idea and adapt as things go along. So here goes nothing. I am off to look at a few pieces of wood at the borg in order to have my desktop, then to work on the actual framework. More to come…

Well like most people my shop is everchanging. I have added a few items in the past few months to make it easier to work around the shop. They are projects I suppose but I figured I would just post them here in blog form instead.
Since I am going to try out posting this to my new FaceBook page, this is what the shop looked liked in September of 2007…

I have added a lot, but that is another story.

Recently I have added a multipurpose assembly table…

This table has come in quite handy a number of times and I am planning to build a similar one as a base for several tools soon. It like most of my work is dimensioned lumber and assembled using the Kreg system.

A small quick project was this screwdriver/tape measure rack to store my new set of screwdrivers I got for Christmas….

and the latest addition as noted in my latest project post is my lumber rack…

This to is built out of dimensioned lumber and some scraps of various stuff I had around the shop. Not the prettiest thing in the world but oh how useful and needed.

Thanks all…
