Ok, So this coming week I will be married for 5 years (how time flies). It just happens that the traditional gift for a 5th anniversary is wood (How lucky!). I wanted to do something a little different and beyond what I have done before. After looking at various ideas on the web for small boxes to put something else in.. I found RunnerDucks small keepsake box.
I thought this was a great idea and would hold the other gift well. So I decided to first make a prototype out of what else.. a 2×4 scrap. I used the general idea but adapted things as needed. I was so happy with where it was going that I went to WoodCraft and bought a few really nice turning blocks of exotics to make into the final box.
Here is a small run down of how I did the box ( I documented the final box a little better in pics but I’ll post that one next weekend more then likely)
First I actually cut the lid form the block and not having a bandsaw I used a miter box.
Then used a forstner bit to drill out the actual box.
Taped the two pieces to gether so I could line up the dowel hole using my drill press.
Then glued a 1/4” dowel into the lid as noted in the directions.
After drying time and trimming and sanding decided to actually finish the 2×4 box completely
One thing I decided to try that is differnt is to flock the interior of the box rather then just ptting felt in it. So I went back to WoodCraft and got some information, tips and supplies
I just finished the flocking of the piece a few minutes ago so it is still drying but I like how it looks at the moment, so much so I went ahead and flocked the final piece as well.
So the pieces should be dry in sometime tomorrow morning and I look forward to seeing how they turn out. I will post more anout the final piece later on as I mentioned. I really liked making them and they did not take a very long time I Still have several pieces of the wood and plan to make a few more.. hmm perhaps some Christmas gifts are in order. :)
Thanks all
CtL

You can upgrade to flickr Pro and upload to your hears content. It’s quite reasonable.
Nice prototype.

Nice idea for a small box. Thanks for the link, and thanks for your step-by-step.
Looking forward to the “Good wood” boxes being posted.
Keep it up.
