We finally “Both” had the week-end “off” at the same time, of course my schedule is quite flexible, I am the stay at home grandpa, just had to tell little people that we are gone, can’t babysit this weekend. Packed up the travel van and we are off ! Left after work Friday and drove North till it got dark,no plan. The local campground in that area had a sign up in parking lot, no overnight vehicles on parking lot. (Walmart these days whats happing eh ?) So we did find a real campground, paid the BIG money and slept very well. Next morning was tour the town and see the sites, found a beautiful store that sold locally made, mennonite style furniture and items from reclaimed lumber. Remarkable talent ! I browsed there over 3 hours, looking at details, trying to find errors in their workmanship. NONE ! What depressed me was, if I tried to build that, I could NOT compete with the prices they were charging ! They were reasonable, they had to compete in the REAL world as well. The only thing I could do better was add an unique detail to the piece that I would make myself. (What dollars would that be worth ?)
Next, at the other end of town, was a reclaim store ! YIKES they had some great old timbers, doors, fireplace mantel material, etc.
Day 2: Flee market at town square. I was able to find a #7 corrugated hand plane for the price I like to pay (Cheap) and a doulbe bladed convex spokeshave, (cheap again) and because I bought 2 items from him he threw in a small old rusty hand saw (Free). I did have to explain to my wife why I needed the 2nd #7 hand plane. The one I have is straight bottom and this one is corrugated, I need to know for my self if the corrugated one does in fact, push easier.
Day 3: We are on our way home, stopped at 2 more flee markets, 1 antiqe “TOWN” and 1 tourist trap shopping (This was HER day) She came home with new outfits and I was able to pickup 1 sets of loverd window covers, 1 set of storm window hinged covers and 1 set of T& G panels doors. (We talked a bit and I told him what I do, thinking his price was higher than what I wanted to pay, The guy is retiring and wanted me to have them, price was half of what he was asking. )
Overall the week end was terrific, it was only till I came home that the weekend was all about what I like to look at ! “Hand built furniture, old lumber, old tools, antiques .
Life is Good.
