Just Wondering - About Daily Top 3

Does anyone have any insight as to how the Daily Top 3 are selected? I’ve often wondered how they are selected. I’ve had several of my projects make the “Top 3” over the years, but have never really understood why. No big deal, just one of those “gotta know” things.

It’s been discussed before, Bill, but I don’t think they’ve ever given the exact formula. It’s an algorithm based on number of views, comments, and favorites. In my experience, having someone “favorite” your project weighs heavily in favor of getting you into the top three. In other words, no matter how low the view and comment counts may be, if a handful of folks make it a favorite, you will almost certainly make the top three. At least that has been my experience from having made it quite a few times.

Once I made the Daily Top 3 and took a copy of it to McDonalds and told them that I was under the impression it would get me a free cold drink with my hamburger…they actually gave me a free drink… Not sure if it was pity or stupidity…

We’ve had supreme carvings to a piece of 2×4 in the top three. No rime or reason it seems. On one day we had someone post a board with a nail in it (for the fun of it) and it was in the top three. Beneath it out of the running was a murphy bed that was elegantly adorned with inlay… go figure.

I’m pretty sure it’s based on the number of comments. I have made the daily top 3 many times, but not because my projects are any good, but because I have a lot of LJ friends who like to comment on my posts, and I appreciate that, but only because it’s wonderful to have a dialog with fellow members

I have discovered, if you make a clone of the Grr-ripper, it’s a shoe-in for the top 3!

Greg, I guess the MacDonalds around Baton Rouge are better the the stores in Metairie – they would’t even give me a free drink with mine :-) . I knew that the pre-requisite for making the Top 3 had nothing to do with the quality of the project – was just wondering what the magic formula was. Thanks for your input everyone.

Good hearing from you Bob, hope all is going well for you. I’ve not been in the shop too much lately, don’t like the cold and then life happens – you know how it goes.

Charlie that makes sense, I think that you have figured out the great Top 3 mystery.

Greg, I suspect they were just afraid of you. It was easier to give the kook a drink than to call the men in white coats and create a scene. :-)

I look at them all, no matter what position they are in. I just love them all, as I learn something from all of them. I miss Steve

Mine are all shop related jigs, with the exception of a table made from 2×4s. Dont understand that. I think it was because I posted the cover picture of just the legs. Peoples curiosity got the best of them to see the finished product and went to see. Got lots of hits.
Today’s gripper (LJackson) is a piece of wood with a bicycle inner tube stapled to it. Called the Pneumatic Push Stick. Got a big lol off that one.

CaptFerd, it’s like I said. Jigs always get favorited a lot, because folks want to go back and copy them. Lots of favorites is the surest ticket to a top 3 badge.
