So what did Santa bring you????

Blog entry by cajunpen posted 705 days ago 1227 reads 0 times favorited 43 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Thought it might be fun to see what new tools we all got for Christmas. I’ve had my eye on a Rigid Spindle Sander for awhile now and Santa must have heard me – cause I got one.

I also treated myself to a new Jacobsen Work Bench about a month ago – but I’ve waited until after Christmas to open it up, so I guess it counts as a Santa gift.

Hope everyone got just what they were hoping for. Of course it’s going to be tough to top that great new shop that Calgirl got :-)

Got myself the Ridig sander for Christmas also. Works great! I really like that I can sand end grain without burning it. This will be a big help for sanding the peices for the segmented turnings that I do. I do have two questions for those who already own this sander and that is what does the wearplate do and what is the proper adjustment for it?

And I also got some hand tools that will turn into a gift certificate so i can get what I need/want.

My wife and i do something like that. She buys me something and gives me the receipt.

As I purchased my Christmas gift a few weeks ago (a Bench Dog cast-iron router table extension wing) on clearance at Woodcraft, I wasn’t expecting much. And while it isn’t a tool, I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened a gift and found a new “Lumberjocks.com” hooded sweatshirt! Do I have an awesome wife, or what?

God is GOOD! I got the new sanding table, same as cajunpen, and the two new impact 90’s that Ridgid has out now, from my wife. She tried to be sneaky but I guessed it! Also, I had poured some 30 yards of concrete for a woodworking friend of mine this summer and refused to be paid by him. So I walked out in my shop after opening presents yesterday and I see that he bought me a new Ridgid planer! That I didn’t guess. What a surprise. That little boy excitement never leaves us, it’s just in an older package.

Wow….Rigid made some cash this year..I got the same spindle sander as everyone else! I have been eying it ever since I read the Fine Woodworking review on spindle sanders and it came out on top, over the more expensive models..and it converts to an oscillating belt/edge sander! Now I have to build a wheeled cabinet for it! I also got some small stuff like a contour gage, the Wexley digital angle finder, and one of those sensor switches that turns on your vacuum when you switch on a tool thats plugged into the same device! And, just for fun my wife got me one of those micro remote control helicopters!..I must confess, the helicopter has got the most attention out of the whole loot pile so far! Just a big kid at heart I guess…

Ho Ho Ho. I beat you all! I spent two entire days relishing the company of my wife and my daughter and her fiance’. After more than eighty straignt 12 hour plus midnight shifts at the power plant, the quality time off with family was treasured. I even found time to work on wifey’s Christmas present by completing the installation of two new water closets (Toto toilets) and “her” shower fixtures (Hansgrogh) just in time for her sister’s famiily to come visit. Oh, I did get a set of screw drivers. WOOOHOO. Happy Holiday’s all.

I had treated myself to an early present of a 10” Jet Cabinet Saw with 50” Exacta fence. I must have been a good boy, though, because my wife gave me two Starrett squares (12” combination and 4” double square) and some rachetting wrenches. Now to just find time to put them to use.

I got a 50 dollar gift certificate from Lee Valley, a Lee Valley shop clock with temperature and humidity gauges, a fleece shirt and a waffle weave shirt. Definite Nebraska winter shop wear.
And I got to watch my wife sit down at the counter and use her new Detail Master III Dagger and two handtips to free-hand an intricate design on a little pine frame she had laying around (I also got her a Lora Irish book on woodburning too). If I had set down to do it, it would have had some noodling about, a lame signature and a short trip to the trash bin. Win-Win – I think we will collaborate on some cool stuff for resale.

hmmm I’m sure eyeing that rigid spindle sander….. time to start making the tax refund “need” list…...
Got a new grinder – one actually worth having!! And a great hand sander. Got a cord of firewood, too. And yep – been scouting out some pieces that will make it to the lathe instead of the stove.
Course nothing under the tree can compare with my daughter and her husband making it home and actually making time to see me :) worst thing about families that aren’t all together anymore. Stop and see his mother, then his dad, then grandparents on his side, then her mother, then her mother’s family… made it to my house a little after noon on Christmas – then to my mother’s and to see the aunts etc…. Jeesh hard to live 7 hours away from those we love. Course wife is 15 hours from her mom, and 3000 miles from her brother with a sister and another brother inbetween. So Christmas here was pretty great for me. Not as great for my wife. Can’t make a wooden trip to see her mom :( but we did get out to see her before Thanksgiving. Happy New Year to all!

I was going to get a spindle sander for Christmas, but the guy at Sears told my daughter that there was no such thing. So, my daughter asked the fella to show her a good quality router. Then, being daddy’s little girl said, “Give me the one that’s better than that. I ended up with a very nice Milwaukee fixed based router. I’d have pictures, but since I live in Michigan and my daughter lives in Arizona, I had to ship it home and it won’t show up till next week (bummer).

Of course, after she gave me the router, she said, “Let’s talk about a bed for your newest granddaughter …”

That’s my girl.

:-) Santa was pretty good to me this year. I got quite a bit for Christmas and then spent gift cards for some of the other items on my list…

However – I have to say that the best gift was seeing my family and spending 3 days with my nephews. They’re 3 of the meanest kids around, and I love ‘em to death! They got every toy known for Christmas and spent most of the holiday in the garage with Uncle Tim working on ‘projects’. Mostly various pieces of wood with some glue and stain on them. Talk about priceless…

As an early Xmas present, Russel (a fellow LJ, just a few posts above me) gifted me a very nice Ridgid lathe and a set of gouges. Having no clue how to use one of these beasties, I bought a DVD, and will start with some nice scraps. First goal is to not get dead…

My wife bought me the Ridgid spindle sander that so many other LJ’s also received…I’m stoked to get this bad boy unboxed and smoothing stuff. Also an edge-guide for my PC 690, and some panel-raising bits, which, sadly, are too big in mass for my little router to handle. I’ll need to either return them or save my pennies for a nice big router.

With my Xmas cash, I bought myself the Rockler router table and featherboard kit, which will be nice for some upcoming projects.

A good haul, and one that will help me make many gifts for next year!

Rikkor – the newest granddaughter arrived in July. I had to make a bed for her older brother who is now just past 2 so he could vacate the crib. She’s outgrown the “grandma” crib I made her. So, I figure I’ve got about 18 months to make the bed. However, Daddy’s girl has plans. She wants a daybed with a trundle and a very specific design . . . She’s got almost as many ideas as her mother. ;-)

Damocles – I hope that lathe gets more use from you that I could give it. I’m waiting anxiously to see what you can do.
