ruined a oak coffee table with dye or tried to put dye on oak without consulting

I built a coffee table right, red oak 5/4 ripped in inch & 1/4 wide strips then turned up on edge to show rays and flecks, it was just a great look, then machined it down with router to inch or so, looked great done a arts and crafts style base with little square spindles on the legs or framed ends, then used dye without a wash coat put on like 3 coats thinking the pores would fill boy was I wrong, then went up there this morn and the dam thing had white streaks on it, I almost popped my pants, as Charles Neil says a bad finisher can make a great project look ghastly, nasty, hideous, dungly, caffitated, gonna take a router and skim off the wood and build a new base, and go with a natu...
