I am beginning to set up a small wood shop on limited budget. Thier are two used table saws that cought my eye. One is a King with round guides for the fence, 2 hp 220 motor about 10 – 12 years old. The other is a Rigid, 1 hp larger working surface and I think a better fence. It is about 5 years old.
What is more important, the fence and guide or the size of the motor?

Generally speaking, It’s easier to upgrade a fence then it is to upgrade a motor. but it really boils down to what you’re intentions are, and what you wanna do – upgrade and fix a saw, or get something that will work for you today – and do woodworking. I’m not familiar with the “King” brand, and based on your profile, I’m not even sure where you’re at (to know what’s available in your market). I’m also not sure which Ridgid saw you saw that is 1HP – do you have the model numbers of those 2? (most Ridgid that I know are 1.5HP – which makes the different in power to the 2HP somewhat minimal)

The Ridgid has a great fence if it’s the one I think it is. Like Purp says it’s fairly easy to up grade a fence ,but If you have a limited budget that upgrade can cost as much as an inexpensive saw $ 250- $450 . I always tell my students if you buy a table saw check the fence out first since most inexpensive saws have under 2Hp any how. After fence and hp then check other accessories.

Thanks. Went for the Rigid and got a new one. Better fence and caster system than the used one.
