Wooden Disc #2: I Exploded It :(

Well, right when I was about to finish the disc, it friggin blew up on me:

Darn. I had to start all over and make a new one, slightly thicker this time (the original was < 1/16” thick through the center). The image gallery has more pictures of it:

Hopefully I won’t have to double-make any future commissions.

yikes, your lucky you didnt get hurt. what a shame because it looked like a nice piece

Yeah, thankfully I had it running at a slow speed and was wearing safety glasses and a respirator. But it could have still ended poorly if one of those sharp ends caught me. It was a pretty impressive explosion for such a thin piece of wood.

I can see that thin platters can be a bit dangerous. Did it break at some glue lines? If so, some glues can become weakened by heat generated from the turning work. Just a thought.

It broke along the grain on either side of the tenon, which I was turning off. Maybe the gouge caught, or maybe I had weakened the grain by pushing too much while sanding the opposite side. I’m not sure if it broke along the glue line… I’ll take a look.
