I’ve been wanting to get some new, bigger, better bird feeders but I couldn’t find any I liked. When I say “liked” I mean not small, not cheaply made, and don’t cost an arm and a leg. Twenty, thirty bucks or more for some cheap a** plastic or metal or wood poorly constructed piece of junk? No thanks. So I decided to build my own.
Well I always have built my own but I was looking to get off easy and not have to take the time to build them. I thought, that if I ...

I wanted to share my experiences in making landing nets with you.
This is from an article I wrote for the August 2010 edition of On The Fly, the newsletter for the Fly Fishing Club of Orange County.
Building the Perfect Landing NetBy Greg Madrigal
Like many of you, I started fishing when I was very young, and something about it never let go of me. Growing up with 5 sisters left our family with little to no money most of the time. Work for my father was hard to come by growing u...

Hello. This is a new blog series I am doing. The topic is how to make a tap and screw jig for making large wooden screws.
To start I will say that I hope many of the readers find this series useful because they can use the knowledge to make their own screws and nuts for clamps, vises, presses, etc… It took my friend and I hours upon hours, spread over months to finally get a functioning tap and screw jig. So my purpose in writing this blog is to give other woodworkers the proper inst...

After looking at SPalm’s step cutting board blog, I figured that I would have to try my hand at making a double step board. I found some cherry, maple and purple heart from prior projects I followed the instructions to but the pieces:
After glue up and cutting the two sections, I knew I wouldn’t have enough, so I set my sights a little lower.I had enough of the triangles to make a hexagon.
I really need to rethink the clamping process before I start the next one, and al...

This is a second generation Steps cutting board made out of walnut, maple, and cherry. The first Steps board I made used a basic square with edge of maple and cherry to make it a block and a notch to do the stepping. I wanted to try to make a stepping board using the hex Tumbling Block design, and this is what I came up with.
In order to make the hex do the stepping, I needed to notch all three sides, as can be seen in the Sketchup drawing. The cool thing here is that it steps in two di...

Hey everybody, after a few personal messages here is my version of a how to on a Drunken Checker Board. I of coarse bow to the Chairman of the Board and pay tribute with beer. This is a Off-Checker pattern I call “Drunken Alice in Wonderland” The “serendipitous” nature of this piece is appealing in a far out sort of way. Here Goes…
So first I prepare the Material. I am using Hard Maple and Walnut both are surfaced flat and cut 1” x 9” x 14&...

So having read part #1 I’ll complete the second variation of the Drunken checker board pattern. The process is basically the same except for one critical part and is as follows.
Start again by taping two blanks together. This time In stead of making opposing S cuts I’ll follow the S pattern with each cut. (I get a little sloppy, but it works out OK). Follow the Part #1 procedure.
CRITICAL PART! This step creates the difference between the pattern in part one ...

I recently uploaded pictures of a cutting board (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/30543) and several fellow LJs asked me to show how it was put together. Subsequently, Patron quickly deduced the process and wrote a nice blog showing the step by step process for how to achieve the pattern. I encourage anyone who is interested to take a look because he has some nice pictures outlining the process. http://lumberjocks.com/patron/blog/15074. I thought I would add a short amendment to his blog de...
