Part 1: Hmmm might be a bad start.

08-23-2009 07:59 PM by bluchz | 14 comments »

This will start with a question for the cabinet guys. I got 3/4” birch ply and 1/2” maple ply to make the cabinet boxes out of, why you ask? good question. I wasn’t paying attention when i place my special order for 1/2” pre-finished ply.well the plan was to make the sides of the base cabinets from 3/4” ply and the backs and bottoms from 1/2” ply. Anyone see a problem with this? I guess i can’t live with the bottom and the sides having different looks...

I had a rainy day and couldn’t work, so i got to spent about 4 hours making the boxes for the base cabinets. I decided to go with the baltic birch maple plywood mix after listening to comments. here is how they turned out. These are put together with glue and nails i hope that will be strong enough. The joints are all rabbited or dado. I did use a few screws where i thought it wouldn’t show.

Here is the mock up of the door and drawer fronts for the kitchen cabinets. These are paint grade cabinets and will be finished in white with a dark gray glaze to highlight the profile grooves. I am looking for the cabinet guys to critique the proportions, drawer and door placement and anything else that looks wrong :/ This is my first Cabinet job that i am being paid for and i don’t want it to have to be redone in a year or 2 because i made some idiotic mistake!Anyway the cabinet pictu...

Today i will be attepting to adjust the new dovetail jig and then cutting all the drawer sides, fronts, and backs. There are 8 drawers to make annd then fit to the cabinets using Blumotion drawer slides, that Rockler shipped without directions thank you very much, but the new Leigh 12” jig will prove to be a nice addition to the shop as soon as i figure out how to use it. Here is a pic of the new jig after the assembly was completed. Not the assembly time measured in beer is 2 12oz cans!

OK so the day wen well. I found the directions for the Blumotion drawer slides, despite the blue can fairy’s.I thought i would post the results. This is a video but it is the first time I have tried to post one so maybe it will work. I guess not but anyway the drawer closes just like the video on the rockler website.and here are some close ups of the dovetails. They need some work, i need to use backer boards to prevent tear-out but the fit was very nice.

04-25-2010 02:18 PM by bluchz | 1 comment »

Finally got the base cabinets installed. This is the 2nd longest kitchen build in history!!!!!! The granite guys have been called and hopefully i can start on the upper cabinets as soon as the size is decided. There is talk of making them go all the way to the ceiling,(9’ or 10’) but i think it would make the small kitchen smaller. Here are some pics. There is still some touch-up painting to do and Toe kick to install. The floor was out of level by 2” in spots so there were a...
