What Is Burl?

09-08-2012 05:51 PM by OregonBurls | 9 comments »

What Is Burl? I have discovered that this question is the most searched question for burls on the internet. Over 140,000 times world wide per month. So I read what Wikipedia’s definition is and found out that they are not clear and in some details are wrong in their definition. So I am going to attempt to clear the muddy waters. First of all Wikipedia says: “A burl (American English) or bur or burr (used in all non-US English speaking countries) is a tree growth in which the grain ha...

Game Calls #2: Scratch Box Turkey Calls

02-28-2013 05:14 PM by ghost5 | 1 comment »

After posting a few of these neat little calls I thought some other folks might like to know how to make them. They are an easy project and another way to use some of that scrap wood. The easiest way to make a scratch box is to have a dedicated mortiser set up with a 1/2”cutter but since I don’t have one here is how I do it. If you do have one you can quickly see how to use it to accomplish what I am doing. I start with a 1 & 5/8”“x4” piece 1/2” t...

Shadow Casting Lamp

09-12-2012 04:59 PM by WoodJediNTraining | 7 comments »

This shadow casting lamp creates a cool effect to any room by casting a shadow on a wall of any scene you’d like to create in the lamps silhouette panels. For this project I used horses. The front of the lamp shows a horse in a natural calm state on all 4’s . And the frosted front panel of glass gives a nice subtle tone of light to illuminate the room. The back of the lamp has a silhouette of a horse raring on it’s hind legs. This is the side that casts a shadow on...

The Smartdesk #1: The Electronic executive Desk

01-14-2010 04:03 AM by TheBasiks | 4 comments »

This will be the best investment that our clients will ever make, with multitouch technology, drafting, as well as designing tools along with a custom built in computer, a Wacom 21ux cintiq, monitor recording speakers, touch opened drawers and a desk equipped with adequate enough space. The executive desk should be well designed but should also incorporate a executive, modern environment. The desk should have ample enough space for designing, pre-production audio engineering and client pres...

Game Calls #1: Turkey Friction Call

02-26-2013 12:42 PM by ghost5 | 8 comments »

Well, thanks to the comments and questions I have gotten I dug through my pics to find one I had on how to make a pot call. So for the folks that want a quick tutorial here we go. A pot call is basically a shallow dish containing two ledges inside. One is cut into the rim to hold the playing surface while the second is a ring left in the center raised to clear the bottom of the pot and still leave a space between the sound board that rests on it and the playing surface above it. One thi...

Review of Tropical Exotic Hardwoods of Latin America

03-12-2012 02:08 AM by jusfine | 6 comments »

As we were taking in some rays in the Palm Springs area last month, I had the urge to see some lumber or tools, and realized it was not a long drive to Carlsbad California to the Tropical Exotic Hardwoods supplier. Their website is here It was relatively easy to find with GPS, and the warehouse was large and well lit. There were a few customers while we were there (about an hour), but it was not really busy – it was a week day around lunch time. They had ...
