About my finishes

1372 days ago by Chris Davis | 10 comments »

People often ask me about my finishes and I am always wondering about how others do their finish too. I feel the finish is the key to any furniture. A bad finish can destroy the look and the value of a piece. I thought I’d share what I do and what material and equipment I use. As in equipment, I use an air assisted airless. It takes the best of both worlds. Low air volume but without using too high of pressure as in the airless rigs. It works like an airless, which I used for ...

Way Back Wednesday #1: November 10, 2010

1378 days ago by Chris Davis | 1 comment »

My intent for Way Back Wednesday was to post pictures of project that go back years. Some that are even PC (Pre-Chris). I thought I’d start first with the “Original Crew”. The first picture is Gary (my dad) and three of his brothers (Jeff, Larry, and Curtis). Not pictured in the first picture of he Original Crew is my mom Lou, uncle Jimmy and my Grandpa Ray. This is truly a family business. All my uncles have worked here and the youngest works with me now. I do have ...

Tip Tuesday #1: Buy “Solid” wood

1379 days ago by Chris Davis | 10 comments »

Some associate veneers as being low quality and if you truly want quality go all solid. Really the opposite could be true. Veneers got a bad rap around the 60’s when cheap furniture was introduced into the market. There was delaminating, which is the lifting of the veneer, because of a bad process and gules. What is veneer? Veneer is a thinly sliced piece of wood glued onto a substrate or a another, usually manufactured, wood like MDF or plywood. With today’s technology these slices ca...

Technique Thursday #1: November 4, 2010

1384 days ago by Chris Davis | 1 comment »

I thought I’d post something for each day of the week. Thursday’s will be Technique Thursday. I’ll tell about some sort of technique that I use in woodworking. Templates: Can’t stress how important templates are. I’ll build them from 1/2” material to form the shape of a cut out. I always use a mechanical means of making a straight cut or a perfect arc (fence, straight edge, compass). It will then be used to trace onto the good piece, rough cut with...

King Excalibur Bookcases

1894 days ago by Chris Davis | 0 comments »

I have the bookcase built for the murphy bed. They went together fairly quickly. I made a jig that acts as a square for the shelves. It also keeps the shelves from moving when the pocket screws at put in. Here is a picture of the jig. I have it notched out for an overhang I usually put on the top. I usually attach all shelves on one side and then flip it over and repeat. With the jig it also keeps glue from getting everywhere when I flip it. Here is the assemble footage Here are ...

New Showroom Cam

2052 days ago by Chris Davis | 0 comments »

We have now added a Showroom cam to our live video feed. We put this camera in our showroom area for when there is no activity in the shop, which is common on Saturdays. This will also be helpful to us when we’re all needed in the shop and have to abandoned the showroom. We can keep an eye on who comes in. For now the camera will be on the same feed, which means that you’ll only see one image at a time and will still be controlled by my “tool belt remote”. In the ne...
