I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action.
Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

When designing the shop I tried to anticipate the type of work we would be doing. Looking back, I wasn’t even close.
However, in spite of that, the work flow is very much the same for many woodworking projects. Our shop is laid out considering that work flow.
Our entrance door is where we unload both sheet goods and solid lumber. We stack the lumber on stickers, prior to use, and the plywood is placed on a drywall cart.
We place lumber on the chop saw station, which ...

There is an ongoing debate about whether Lumberjocks should be the focus of a marketing plan by professional woodworkers. There are quite a few professionals on this site now, all of us trying to make a living.
I define “professional” as someone that makes all, or most of their income from their woodworking and craft work. Selling something once in a while from your hobby work really has nothing in common with “having” to sell something every day to buy food and s...

The Sign of a Craftsman
Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Anybody that enters your shop and sees one of these beauties would have no doubt that you can administer dovetails with the skill of a legendary craftsman.
Here are some thoughts on this table style. The table is designed to accommodate a certain work style, particular...

Okay this maybe odd but, I have tried to get into a few different shops. I worked in one for a little while and I loved it but, I was working on commission and was having problems getting payed by the owner.
My question is about my resume. I have always been very creative and know that I can do what ever a job would require. I also know the economy is in a hole right now. But I am going to post my resume and I would love some feed back. Please be very critical. I am an artist and have ...

Today was one of the most humiliating and degrading days of my life. I made some casings for a customer and glanced at the work order, it said 12’ boards, I made 10’. Another order called out a (1) 3/4” board, and (4) 1” boards, I made them all 1”. Today I had my eyes opened to competency. I was in such a hurry and didn’t even realize the mistakes I had made. The bad part is my items made it past quality control, so I guess he too was competent. We ge...

I took another (room full of dust) pass with the jointing sled setup. You can see the low parts at the edges. I think by now I’ve taken more than 1/16 off the top.
You can see how it bows down in the corners.
And where poor control of the router and sled combo when stopping the router caused it to bounce and i got a small divot. Thankfully, it is very shallow and the next pass should clean it up.
One more pass and she should be plane!

I had a nice weekend. Saturday I worked with a local cabinet maker helping him catch up on his schedule. We are nearly finished with the 3rd kitchen cabinet job, and then he will be caught up. I think I have worked about 8-9 days this summer with him on Saturdays.
Sunday was relaxing, went to church and then home with the family, and a nap. A nap makes a lot of things better for some reason (not to take anything away from church).
Today, Monday, I have the Hymn Number Board just abo...
