Selling Your Crafts & Art on the Internet: My new Strategy with Crosslinked Lumberjocks & Etsy.com

316 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 30 comments »

There is an ongoing debate about whether Lumberjocks should be the focus of a marketing plan by professional woodworkers. There are quite a few professionals on this site now, all of us trying to make a living. I define “professional” as someone that makes all, or most of their income from their woodworking and craft work. Selling something once in a while from your hobby work really has nothing in common with “having” to sell something every day to buy food and s...

Workbenches for the Shop

761 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 31 comments »

The Sign of a Craftsman Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Anybody that enters your shop and sees one of these beauties would have no doubt that you can administer dovetails with the skill of a legendary craftsman. Here are some thoughts on this table style. The table is designed to accommodate a certain work style, particular...

Workbench 101

663 days ago by PanamaJack | 20 comments »

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

Workbench Project #1: The workbench project begins!

769 days ago by Jon3 | 4 comments »

NOTE All of my photos have been migrated to a new provider, and the links in my posts are likely out of date. You can find the photos here. I actually began this project around 6-9 months ago, when I got into woodworking, and I did some of the original work then. It is surprising how far I’ve come in what I know to do, and not do, since then. I had a leftover benchtop that I picked up basically free from family friends. It was not pretty! It had a fairly thick finish on ...

Hard to move forward!

25 days ago by Jbreth | 18 comments »

Today was one of the most humiliating and degrading days of my life. I made some casings for a customer and glanced at the work order, it said 12’ boards, I made 10’. Another order called out a (1) 3/4” board, and (4) 1” boards, I made them all 1”. Today I had my eyes opened to competency. I was in such a hurry and didn’t even realize the mistakes I had made. The bad part is my items made it past quality control, so I guess he too was competent. We ge...

Resume,If you have hired someone before please read

353 days ago by Joshua Howe | 22 comments »

Okay this maybe odd but, I have tried to get into a few different shops. I worked in one for a little while and I loved it but, I was working on commission and was having problems getting payed by the owner. My question is about my resume. I have always been very creative and know that I can do what ever a job would require. I also know the economy is in a hole right now. But I am going to post my resume and I would love some feed back. Please be very critical. I am an artist and have ...

Workbench Project #5: Short but sweet entry

766 days ago by Jon3 | 7 comments »

Finally got the final pass done on the bench. You can see the zig-zag lines all over from the router’s bit. I got a nice flat bottom bit, but you’re going to be going against the grain at SOME point, so you’ll still get a little bit of fuzz to deal with. I got out the 120 grit discs and the sander, and went to work. Switched over to 180 and then 220, and got it nice and shiny. That was enough work for one day!

Workbench Project #4: Jointed top complete!

766 days ago by Jon3 | 1 comment »

I took another (room full of dust) pass with the jointing sled setup. You can see the low parts at the edges. I think by now I’ve taken more than 1/16 off the top. You can see how it bows down in the corners. And where poor control of the router and sled combo when stopping the router caused it to bounce and i got a small divot. Thankfully, it is very shallow and the next pass should clean it up. One more pass and she should be plane!

auto vacuum for my miter saw

797 days ago by joey | 2 comments »

Well I got myself out in the shop lined up the fence for the miter saw and leveled it to the bench. I also drilled and ran the vacuum hoses to the saw, at first I wasn’t sure what to use to connect the hose to the saw but 1 1/2 PVC pipe works fine with a couple of wraps of duct tape to snug it up I placed a small vacuum that I use to use to clean out cabinets after I installed them under my bench, it is small enough that it really don’t take to much room and is a powerful l...
