The Sign of a Craftsman
Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Today was one of the most humiliating and degrading days of my life. I made some casings for a customer and glanced at the work order, it said 12’ boards, I made 10’. Another order called out a (1) 3/4” board, and (4) 1” boards, I made them all 1”. Today I had my eyes opened to competency. I was in such a hurry and didn’t even realize the mistakes I had made. Okay this maybe odd but, I have tried to get into a few different shops. I worked in one for a little while and I loved it but, I was working on commission and was having problems getting payed by the owner.

Finally got the final pass done on the bench. You can see the zig-zag lines all over from the router’s bit. I got a nice flat bottom bit, but you’re going to be going against the grain at SOME point, so you’ll still get a little bit of fuzz to deal with.
I got out the 120 grit discs and the sander, and went to work. Switched over to 180 and then 220, and got it nice and shiny.
That was enough work for one day!

I took another (room full of dust) pass with the jointing sled setup. You can see the low parts at the edges. I think by now I’ve taken more than 1/16 off the top.
You can see how it bows down in the corners.
And where poor control of the router and sled combo when stopping the router caused it to bounce and i got a small divot. Thankfully, it is very shallow and the next pass should clean it up.
One more pass and she should be plane!

Well I got myself out in the shop lined up the fence for the miter saw and leveled it to the bench. I also drilled and ran the vacuum hoses to the saw, at first I wasn’t sure what to use to connect the hose to the saw but 1 1/2 PVC pipe works fine with a couple of wraps of duct tape to snug it up
