Shop Tools #2: Work Sharp - The Wood Tool Sharpener Review

916 days ago by WayneC | 40 comments »

I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action. Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

Workbenches for the Shop

760 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 31 comments »

The Sign of a Craftsman Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Anybody that enters your shop and sees one of these beauties would have no doubt that you can administer dovetails with the skill of a legendary craftsman. Here are some thoughts on this table style. The table is designed to accommodate a certain work style, particular...

Selling Your Crafts & Art on the Internet: My new Strategy with Crosslinked Lumberjocks & Etsy.com

315 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 30 comments »

There is an ongoing debate about whether Lumberjocks should be the focus of a marketing plan by professional woodworkers. There are quite a few professionals on this site now, all of us trying to make a living. I define “professional” as someone that makes all, or most of their income from their woodworking and craft work. Selling something once in a while from your hobby work really has nothing in common with “having” to sell something every day to buy food and s...

Our Shop #1: Basic Layout

870 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 24 comments »

When designing the shop I tried to anticipate the type of work we would be doing. Looking back, I wasn’t even close. However, in spite of that, the work flow is very much the same for many woodworking projects. Our shop is laid out considering that work flow. Our entrance door is where we unload both sheet goods and solid lumber. We stack the lumber on stickers, prior to use, and the plywood is placed on a drywall cart. We place lumber on the chop saw station, which ...

Resume,If you have hired someone before please read

351 days ago by Joshua Howe | 22 comments »

Okay this maybe odd but, I have tried to get into a few different shops. I worked in one for a little while and I loved it but, I was working on commission and was having problems getting payed by the owner. My question is about my resume. I have always been very creative and know that I can do what ever a job would require. I also know the economy is in a hole right now. But I am going to post my resume and I would love some feed back. Please be very critical. I am an artist and have ...

Workbench 101

661 days ago by PanamaJack | 20 comments »

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

Hard to move forward!

24 days ago by Jbreth | 18 comments »

Today was one of the most humiliating and degrading days of my life. I made some casings for a customer and glanced at the work order, it said 12’ boards, I made 10’. Another order called out a (1) 3/4” board, and (4) 1” boards, I made them all 1”. Today I had my eyes opened to competency. I was in such a hurry and didn’t even realize the mistakes I had made. The bad part is my items made it past quality control, so I guess he too was competent. We ge...

Important New Tool Added to the Shop for Summer

861 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 17 comments »

Just a quick note to show a photo of an important new addition to the shop. Last Fall a neighbor said that they had a large window air conditioner that I could have if I wanted it. I waited all Fall, Winter, Spring, and half of the Summer, but did get the big unit installed this week. We have had a very mild Summer here in Kansas, with lots of rain, cloudy days, and cooler weather than normal. So, why rush into installing the window a/c unit? Then, I saw the forecast for this wee...
