I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action.
Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

Thanks to the creativity and hard work of Karson, Mark and Michael we are starting our first unique Woodworking Challenge! Karson sent the proposal to Glen Huey, Senior Editor of Popular Woodworking and asked him for their support in this challenge. Glen whole heartily agreed.
Karson's proposal was to use the cover project from February 2007 issue #160 of Popular Woodworking - Thorsen House Side Table - as our challenge. When we have the Summer and Winter Awards everyone builds their o...

In order to continue challenging us to develop our creativity and woodworking skills let me present another challenge to you, with the support of Popular Woodworking.
Google SketchUp is a powerful yet easy-to-learn 3D software tool that is currently being discussed in each woodworking forum or group. Yes, it can save you costs during the designing phase and it will boost the creativity of your finished pieces when you master it.
And what’s the best ...

Last month, the Virtual Dining Table Challenge was presented, with the support of Popular Woodworking, to challenge us to continue developing our creativity and woodworking skills.
THE ENTRIESAt the wrap-up of the challenge, we had 22 entries and I want to congratulate everyone who took up the challenge. It was obvious, through the designs and the discussions, that the challenge was a success, with everyone (both designers and readers) learning some new skills. You can see all of the e...

I wanted a way to share the Sketchup blog I’ve been doing at Fine Woodworking with my friends here at LJ. While I can’t post the commentary because of contractual stuff with FWW (you should all subscibe anyway…it’s a great resource) I can let you know when I’ve posted another video tutorial on brightcove.com. All you’ll need to do is go to brightcove .com and either search for me…treefarmer…or sketchup…(there are lots of others there as we...

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

I had a request for the dimensions I used. These are a bit ugly because I just pulled the dimensions as I needed them and was indiscriminate of the plane I was on in the rendering and there are duplicates thoughout. My apologies but it was just for my own benefit when I added them. However, I wanted to get them posted as I’m already a day a late with the post.
Bob Babcock, if you view this thread, can you suggest a place to house the actual sketchup file? I don’t know if I want...

It’s Finally Here!
I have completed my first feature woodworking video. This video shows how I sharpen my card scrapers.
It is a simple process and I kept the instruction simple with some close-up video action.
I hope this post goes smooth, it has taken me all day to figure out how to finish up the video and 3 attempts to get it online. So this is a pretty big moment.
I can work on polished video later but I have to start somewhere.
I hope that this video on sharpening ca...

I thought it would make sense to share how I have Sketchup setup for woodworking. The basic settings make a difference in how Sketchup works for different purposes.
One caveat…I use Sketchup Pro…the free version may not have all these settings. I think it does but I’m not positive. I’ll be installing the free version on my other computer shortly so I can check these things.
There are two areas where you will likely want to make changes. The Preferences window and...
