Shop Skills #2: Card Scrapers the Video!

333 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 52 comments »

It’s Finally Here! I have completed my first feature woodworking video. This video shows how I sharpen my card scrapers. It is a simple process and I kept the instruction simple with some close-up video action. I hope this post goes smooth, it has taken me all day to figure out how to finish up the video and 3 attempts to get it online. So this is a pretty big moment. I can work on polished video later but I have to start somewhere. I hope that this video on sharpening ca...

Photography #1: A Photography Studio In The Shop

696 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 24 comments »

The final act… Buffing the final coat of finish is the moment of birth for a project. After that it is carefully wrapped and delivered to start its’ life with family, friend, or client. One part of the woodworking process that most of us don’t figure in is the photography. I can tell you from experience that this a very important part of furniture making. It is not an option if you are planning on doing woodworking and furniture as a business, be it full or part time....

79- Nicole's Picture Frame

287 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 21 comments »

About 4 days before Christmas, I started making a nice little picture frame for a custom piece of art I had made up for Nicole. A gift for a special girl requires some special wood. So I pulled out my best sheets of curly maple veneer and a couple of sheets of home-sawn afzelia wood (thanks for link Logan!) that I received from David Marks. You may find it odd that I decided to use solid maple as the substrate for the frame. I thought this would be a fun experiment, and when the rabbets ar...

Sketchup Tutorials #4: Basic Settings

833 days ago by Bob Babcock | 12 comments »

I thought it would make sense to share how I have Sketchup setup for woodworking. The basic settings make a difference in how Sketchup works for different purposes. One caveat…I use Sketchup Pro…the free version may not have all these settings. I think it does but I’m not positive. I’ll be installing the free version on my other computer shortly so I can check these things. There are two areas where you will likely want to make changes. The Preferences window and...

Sketchup Tutorials #1: Current videos posted on Fine Woodworking

915 days ago by Bob Babcock | 17 comments »

I wanted a way to share the Sketchup blog I’ve been doing at Fine Woodworking with my friends here at LJ. While I can’t post the commentary because of contractual stuff with FWW (you should all subscibe anyway…it’s a great resource) I can let you know when I’ve posted another video tutorial on brightcove.com. All you’ll need to do is go to brightcove .com and either search for me…treefarmer…or sketchup…(there are lots of others there as we...

Shop Skills #3: Sharpening Card Scrapers - The Lost Scene...

332 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 28 comments »

Forgive My Insensitivity… A public Thank You is in order before I go any further. I had some great support from two individuals that are a part of LumberJocks. I relied heavily on Dave Pruett for “on call” support to figure out how to edit / process / and post my video. I need to thank Marc Spagnuolo as well. I did not continually call him like Dave, but his advice and pointers were taken to heart and helped me out as well. As with my woodworking, my achievement...

Shop Skills #5: Using Toner to Add or Change Color

75 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 36 comments »

Sorry for the False Start Guys… I had the privacy setting turned on when I posted to YouTube. (D’oh!) It’s Finally Here! Whew! It takes a lot of work to shoot a video, edit, and get it posted to the internet. I am still struggling with posting to the internet. My HD file sizes are too big to be accepted by BlipTv and YouTube, and once I get the size down to an acceptable limit, they lose quite a bit of quality. This is a bit frustrating and makes me sad to see al...

Archive Videos #1: Sweedish woodworking and misc.

135 days ago by dryhter | 3 comments »

I was at a blogsite http://villagecarpenter.blogspot.com/ and followed a link to some archived video. I spent the better part of a day watching and marveling over these glimpse into the past. I think it is the fact that these were utilitarian items made for everyday use and although some artistry was involved most important was that the piece function. These craftsmen developed the skills to economically produce a no frill product. If you can take the time to watch you will notice that there...
