The Craftsman's Path #12: The joy of a well tuned hand plane

411 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 9 comments »

I spent some time in the shop this past weekend working on a couple of final tasks for a new table before starting on the finishing. I had a choice on how to do the work and opted for a simple block plane. If you’ve done work with well-tuned hand tools, then you know how my experience was…either way, you can read about it here.

413 days ago by Martin Sojka | 18 comments »

Last month, the Virtual Dining Table Challenge was presented, with the support of Popular Woodworking, to challenge us to continue developing our creativity and woodworking skills. THE ENTRIESAt the wrap-up of the challenge, we had 22 entries and I want to congratulate everyone who took up the challenge. It was obvious, through the designs and the discussions, that the challenge was a success, with everyone (both designers and readers) learning some new skills. You can see all of the e...

The Craftsman's Path #11: Sam Maloof on design

415 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 0 comments »

I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’d be interested in hearing the perspectives on this subject from all of you LumberJocks out there. Thanks for reading!

Woodworking? Or Carpentry?

416 days ago by Dekker | 14 comments »

I am reminded once again about the difference between woodworking and woodworking. To the lay-person, anytime you take up your hammer, nails, saw, glue and wood, you are practicing the art of woodworking. At least that’s the way my wife sees it, and when I suggested that I was going to spend some time in the workshop this weekend to play with a box design I had dreamt up, she immediately suggested that I do one of the other woodwork projects that need to be done such as the bathroom ...

The Craftsman's Path #10: Super-simple drill press table upgrade

421 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 1 comment »

Sometimes after you complete a task, you wonder why you procrastinated so long to do it. I had a good day in the shop yesterday doing a simple but, long-overdue upgrade to my drill press. If you are considering a similar upgrade, or you are just looking for some inspiration to tackle a project that you’ve been putting off, you might want to take a look at the post about it on my blog. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think!

Going Pro Part 2: Are you a Pioneer? You'll Need that Spirit.

423 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 11 comments »

Going full time at working with your woodworking tools is quite a daunting task. It was, and still is for me. I get quite a few emails, visitors, and phone calls from other folks, so I know it is daunting for everyone that considers it. I try to be honest with them, about the cost and benefits. I have given out some bits and pieces of my “Pioneering Spirit” sermon over the past months to various individuals, but never all in one place before. So, I decided this morning to...

Going Pro Part 1: Are you so Impassioned you can't stand it? Did you Consider........

423 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 14 comments »

Over in the Forum, there is a question about Going Pro with woodworking, and what should be considered. The Forum Writer stated to “be honest.” I decided to post my comments there, and then also as a Blog Post. It will be easier for me to find my own comments later, and to document the thoughts as a Blog. Just a few misc., and random thoughts, as I don’t have much time this morning 1) Full time is so different than part-time, or hobby woodworking, that there isn’t any c...
