Woodworking in America 2008 #5: WIA Wrap-up

11-20-2008 07:27 PM by Texasgaloot | 3 comments »

I’ve had a couple of days now to rest up, process all that information, and try and heal from the sinus infection I picked up (when I lived in Kentucky, the sinus infection was how I was able to tell the seasons were changing!) I’ve been reflecting on the entire event, trying to figure out how I wanted to condense this huge volume of knowledge and impressions down into one blog, and it is not easy. Here are a few highlights of “Mack Goes to Berea:” 1. Woodworkers ...

Woodworking in America 2008 #4: Day 3, or like the song says, Is It Over Already?

11-17-2008 06:17 AM by Texasgaloot | 4 comments »

This is just like Christmas as a kid. Every day since early July you mark the calendar with hopeful anticipation (I want an Official Range Model Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time!) and then you look around and realize you’re sitting in a sea of wrapping paper and you wish this could go on forever. My WIA day started with a hands-on clinic offered by Deneb Puchalski of Lie-Nielsen on, wait for it… wait for it… hand planing. Yes. Ooooo… Ahhhhh… My...

Ode To Small Shops #1: From Garage to Patio to Deck, My Small Shop Finally Has A Home

11-16-2008 10:10 AM by slooper | 4 comments »

My first shop was what I could squeeze into a one car garage, leaving enough room for the car of course, and a workbench in my crowded basement. If I caught you scratching your head, let me explain. My big tools; table saw, jointer and planer; were in a storage she...

Vacation ignorance

10-17-2008 06:55 PM by Woodbutchery | 2 comments »

Just spent the last two weeks on vacation (I get a ton of it, and I can only roll-over so much of it), and I spent much of it on small projects around the house (see my 1st three project entries). Sometime yesterday I figured that I was just ignurnt about vacation-time, which a lot of people use to get away from doing things. Yet, here I was, straightening up the workshop, working on jigs, fixing up kitchen spaces … some people call it work. So why do I feel rested? I put it dow...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #38: Colors of Shellac from a Kayak

Colors of Shellac from a Kayak ….where art thou going oh gods of kayaking,“i go out in the tops of mountain ponds”,who is the one that you paddle along with by your side,“i paddle with the love of my heart who longs with me….” ”—-and so i turned the page to write again some words of wood—-” ....and so the gods came down to play amongst a colored backdrop, completed with water that still holds dreams of blue liquid desire,...
