Boy Scout Woodworking Merit Badge #1: Intro to shop safety & first project

910 days ago by David | 29 comments »

Boy Scouts from Troop 728 (my son’s Troop) met in the shop today to start working on thier Woodworking Merit Badge. We started off reviewing the requirements and going over shop safety. We then started a sharpening session with chisels, a plane iron and a cabinet scraper. We will continue sharpening on our next session – to bad we didn’t have Wayne & Tom on hand to help with sharpening! The boys learned some basics on using the table saw, miter saw and air stapler. The b...

I wanted a way to share the Sketchup blog I’ve been doing at Fine Woodworking with my friends here at LJ. While I can’t post the commentary because of contractual stuff with FWW (you should all subscibe anyway…it’s a great resource) I can let you know when I’ve posted another video tutorial on brightcove.com. All you’ll need to do is go to brightcove .com and either search for me…treefarmer…or sketchup…(there are lots of others there as we...

917 days ago by WayneC | 40 comments »

I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action. Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

923 days ago by gizmodyne | 26 comments »

Show Time I was excited about the show/contest and woke up early (again). We jetted down to Cerritos Community College. Judging had begun at 8:00 in the morning, though we arrived at 11:00 for the barbecue, show tour, raffle, and prize announcements. The Welcome Wagon Each guest was provided one raffle ticket and a ballot ticket to vote for People's Choice award (Worth $1000) We anxiously walked towards our project. Yes! We learned they had been very liberal with the turn in ti...

924 days ago by gizmodyne | 9 comments »

Last time on Lumberjocks . . .If you read the last blog you saw our finishing woes. Well, we tried patch sanding the cross grain scratch to no success. So we stripped and sanded the enitre door face and the face frame. We were under the gun since our project was due to class by Friday night. 48 Hours to GoThe door is stripped. One coat of stain on the fresh face Our tight schedule: glue up bases while the poly dries. Our first base cabinet assembled and receiving staples for i...

Cabinet Progress #9: Catching some Z's

930 days ago by gizmodyne | 9 comments »

I Feel Boxed In So without Kristin I headed to the shop. Big mistake.. I need to be double checked. Mistake 1: Above you can see that I cut the dovetails on the front of the drawers. Dovetails go on sides! Duh…. Now they are decorative box joints. I will pin for extra strength. Mistake 2: I did not chuck the bit tight. It slipped while cutting the dado for the drawer bottom. Here you can see the hole. I enlarged it for repair. (More on that later) A view of the d...

Presentation to the Delaware Woodworking Guild.

944 days ago by Karson | 7 comments »

Ethan made a comment awhile back that if you get a chance you should join a Woodworking Guild. I went looking and I never found one one in my area. Surprise. I received a phone call 2 days ago asking if I would make a presentation at the Delaware Woodworking Guild, on the Cradle / Glider that I made to win the First LumberJock contest, and was presented in the February Issue of Woodcraft magazine. I told them yes. So if you are close to Northern Delaware on the third Wed of May, May ...

Go Sharks

954 days ago by WayneC | 7 comments »

Between a crazy work schedule and the Hocky Play offs my workshop time is suffering. Any other NHL fans out there? Any favorites for the Stanley cup? I’m hoping to spend some serious time at the Woodworking Show this weekend. It is here in Sacramento starting tomorrow. Hopefully this will give me some additional inspiration to get back to work on my projects and I will not spend too much money on gadgets. I’ve purchased a couple of items that have not been used since they ...
