Show Time
I was excited about the show/contest and woke up early (again). We jetted down to Cerritos Community College. Judging had begun at 8:00 in the morning, though we arrived at 11:00 for the barbecue, show tour, raffle, and prize announcements.
The Welcome Wagon
Each guest was provided one raffle ticket and a ballot ticket to vote for People's Choice award (Worth $1000)
We anxiously walked towards our project.
Yes! We learned they had been very liberal with the turn in ti...

Last time on Lumberjocks . . .If you read the last blog you saw our finishing woes. Well, we tried patch sanding the cross grain scratch to no success. So we stripped and sanded the enitre door face and the face frame.
We were under the gun since our project was due to class by Friday night.
48 Hours to GoThe door is stripped.
One coat of stain on the fresh face
Our tight schedule: glue up bases while the poly dries.
Our first base cabinet assembled and receiving staples for i...

I Feel Boxed In
So without Kristin I headed to the shop. Big mistake.. I need to be double checked.
Mistake 1: Above you can see that I cut the dovetails on the front of the drawers. Dovetails go on sides! Duh…. Now they are decorative box joints. I will pin for extra strength.
Mistake 2: I did not chuck the bit tight. It slipped while cutting the dado for the drawer bottom. Here you can see the hole. I enlarged it for repair. (More on that later)
A view of the d...

Ethan made a comment awhile back that if you get a chance you should join a Woodworking Guild.
I went looking and I never found one one in my area.
Surprise. I received a phone call 2 days ago asking if I would make a presentation at the Delaware Woodworking Guild, on the Cradle / Glider that I made to win the First LumberJock contest, and was presented in the February Issue of Woodcraft magazine.
I told them yes. So if you are close to Northern Delaware on the third Wed of May, May ...

Between a crazy work schedule and the Hocky Play offs my workshop time is suffering. Any other NHL fans out there? Any favorites for the Stanley cup?
I’m hoping to spend some serious time at the Woodworking Show this weekend. It is here in Sacramento starting tomorrow. Hopefully this will give me some additional inspiration to get back to work on my projects and I will not spend too much money on gadgets. I’ve purchased a couple of items that have not been used since they ...

It’s taken me a little longer than I thought to come up with some art for the “woodworkers obit shirt” (in days, not actual hours of work). After looking around for inspiration, I eventually came up with the perfect solution! on using….
A coffin smoother!
I like having a couple layers of meaning, if not a little but of punny-ness.
Here is the line art of what I have so far… The art still needs some finessing, (shading, detail, some typography… but...

Well here goes… I had started out with the intention of simply wanting to learn how to paste a picture into my blog.
Well actually the whole thing started when I finally managed (with the help of my step-son, Nic) to get a wireless network installed that would let my Macintosh talk to the web through my wife’s PC cable modem connection. That led to The WoodWhispser Podcast http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/. And that led me here to LJ, Flickr, box.net and a host of internet wonders tha...

A recent string of chatter had me post an obit spoof as a potential t-shirt idea. Chip, Greg and Dr Sawdust (put in for about 3 dozen orders) and suggested I post this as a bonafide blog to gauge a wider audience… Oh, Obi and Karson like it too!
So fellow jocks, does anyone else out there need a little wardrobe enhancement for the new season? Shall I add something along the lines of the text that follows (with some nice appropriate art – I am a graphic designer afterall!) to my...

Thanks to the creativity and hard work of Karson, Mark and Michael we are starting our first unique Woodworking Challenge! Karson sent the proposal to Glen Huey, Senior Editor of Popular Woodworking and asked him for their support in this challenge. Glen whole heartily agreed.
Karson's proposal was to use the cover project from February 2007 issue #160 of Popular Woodworking - Thorsen House Side Table - as our challenge. When we have the Summer and Winter Awards everyone builds their o...
