Hello. This is a video showing the process I go through to make wooden screws. I briefly try to explain how it is set up and show the jig making the screw. Hello.
I have finally put out the second installment of the tutorial. I had to break up the video into two sections in order to fit it onto youtube.
In this part I begin work on the tap by making the guide block. The lumber you want to use for the guide should be a hardwood at least 2” thick. Hello.
In Part Three of the Tap and Screw Jig Tutorial series I finish the work on the guide block for the Tap. I start by laying out and cutting the metal plate which is inserted into the guide block to guide the dowel through the Tap. After work on the metal plate is done I attach two wooden blocks to create the clearance for the blade as it exists the Tap.

Hello, this is probably my last workbench blog entry, now that my bench is complete! Like I said in my last blog, the workbench has been complete a couple weeks before this post on November 12. With my last post I had wrote about completing the base. After I had the base assembled, glued up, and drawbored I placed the bench top onto the base. Hello.
In the latest video I complete all the work on the Tap. At this point in the series you should have all the knowledge you need to make wooden nuts of whatever size you want. I begin the video by explaining how to locate the mortise for the blade. I continue by showing the entire process involved in making the blade: shaping, hardening, and tempering. I then cut the mortise for the blade and wedge, fit the wedge, and make the “chip clear out” groove in front of the blade....

Many of you have asked me where I was getting my large wooden screws, for the large face vise on my bench. Well a new source has just come up. Over at Christopher Schwarz's blog, he just posted a new source for the wooden screws. Joe, the new guy making the screws, is having a sale on the wooden screws. They are $99/each through the end of March. This is a great deal if you are in the market for these large wooden screws.

After finishing the mockup of the face vise, I was now ready to do it for real. I started by gluing up a couple piece of oak for the main chop. You saw me use my new planer sled to mill the two large faces flat. I used the mockup to locate and cut the 2 main holes for the screws.I used a regular hole saw on my drill press to cut the holes. It was slow going through the hard oak, but I made it through.

Here is a quick update on attaching the face vise. This last weekend I worked on a mockup of the face vise. I thought it best to practice on some cheap lumber instead of the nicer wood I’m planning to use. I didn’t take any pictures of the mockup process, but I will do some detailed pictures when I do the final assembly.

I’ve decided to go with the Holtzapffel style bench, and I’m going to give the large wooden screws, on the face vise, a shot. I talked with Christopher Schwarz about them again and he just loves them. He gave me a couple of sources for the wooden screws. I don’t want to post their email addresses in this blog.
