Not too long ago I was contacted by a young viewer on the A Simple Design of Ocala Facebook Page. Ryan Dellucky of Ponchatoula, Louisiana reached out and asked if I would be willing to donate a badge case or display case. When I asked him what it was for he told me about his grandfather. As Ryan stated, “My Grandfather at age 80 sadly passed away monday night and he was in a vol. fire dept. and he worked for The Times Picayune. He also climbed last year a 110 story building at the ag...
In my last blog entry you may have remembered i asked what is a good mini lathe. I went down to mcquillans blanchards town today and got a Draper 07989 250W 230V Variable Speed Mini Wood Lathe, it has variable speed so i dont have to changed the pulleys, a revoling centre and a faceplate and it only cost €220 + mcquillans always give a 10% discount so it ended up costing only €198 which i think is a real bargain but my parents got it for me for christmas so i cant use it till then:(. I also g...
All in all it was a great event with a lot of great entries. I would like to thank all those who participated in the 1st Annual Whirligig Wars Contest. When I presented the idea of holding a whirligig contest to Steve Ramsey (Woodworking For Mere Mortals) he and I agreed it would be a fun summer event. The response was overwhelming with over 6000 video views of the videos relating to the contest and many great comments from woodworkers all over. So it was decided early on that this would be ...
Too see more images on this and other projects, please go to Pallet Craft! Hello all! This was a gift that I made for my fiance the year before our wedding. This breadbox was my first wood working creation that I built with my own two hands, so please excuse the crudeness of the door! It is all purchased wood that I picked up from a hardware store where I went to school. On each side I carved my wife’s (fiance then) favorite flower (Calla Lily) and burned it with a butane lighter ...

See if you can guess what I am carving on! I’ll put the answer at the bottom of this post. Some friends approached me about making a housewarming present for a new music director at our church. The wood appears to be spruce. It carves like cedar, in that it is soft but splinters easily, sands easily, and it doesn’t really have the color or smell of cedar. I have always wanted to get better at relief carvings, especially wildlife, with the hopes of some day carving a few gunsto...
I got the burning completed this morning. Lots of little scales! They are easy to do, but it is important that they be going the right direction and I change sizes in different areas to indicate more flexibility or bends. I sprayed it with water to judge how it will look with a finish.. pear really is an attractive wood! I won’t be able to work on it for several days, so I should have plenty of time to decide whether to paint it or not. My original plan was to paint, primarily becau...
