Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

On May 6, 2009, I was taken to the hospitol for chest pains and having trouble breathing. I was additted within the hour and given all kinds of test. My lungs had given out. I could not produce enough oxygen to supply my blood. I was put on oxygen that was really being forced in hard. This supplied the oxygen it took to substained my blood. Ireally dont know how they figure all that. All I know is I have to have forced oxygen on at all times now to get enough in my blood. It is truely a pure...

Hey everyone,I am in need of some help! I am writing a book called “The Burl Hunter”. I am looking for interested people who are willing to read as I write to help me out. I am not a great writer but I love to teach.
What I would like to do is get about 5 people to read and critique the book. Even edit my grammar. I would like 2 people who know about burls just to keep me in check and 3 to just read to learn and see how it flows. I need your input.
It is a book that will g...

I made this wood-burned paddle for my mother-in-law/father-in-law’s living room in like, 2002, I think. I took a lot of photos of it, and I couldn’t bring myself to choose only six for a project post. Plus, this is so old, it’s better as a blog. I just used a standard burning tool, with no fancy attachments… just a fine point. I love to wood-burn! It’s hanging in their living room under a shelf with a ship on it. I hope you like it! :)

I recently finished working on a cutting algorithm app for the iPad and iPhone called Smart Cutter, and wanted to share the app with every one hoping get some feedback from carpenters and wood workers.
Smart Cutter finds the maximum number of small pieces cut from a larger sheet of paper with minimum scrap. It employs a state of the art algorithm to generate the maximum number of small pieces cut from a larger sheet of paper, wood, cloth or any other material, with minimum waste. Whether y...

I have been thinking about going into woodworking full time. I like to work with wood all the time, what does that say about me ? Does anyone do woodworking full time ? I just don’t know what would be a good product to make and sell. Does anyone have any ideas ? Some pointers and tips would be good. I like making lathe stuff but I don’t think there is much money in it. Maybe some furniture or boxes ?
