"PROVIDERE" --by RusticWoodArt #6: Providere's Leg Update....

948 days ago by frank | 5 comments »

Providere’s Leg Update…. ....and then some! Well this past week has been a busy one for me around here. Started out with a storm on Monday and then we lost power, so the sump pump in the cellar went down and the water level went up….up….and up. Time to break out the gasoline pump and start pumping, old connected cape houses (1778), old dug cellars and bad grading can sure be a problem at times in the spring. What with water run off from spring rains and mud seaso...

"Willows and Wild Turkey's" --by RusticWoodArt

950 days ago by frank | 7 comments »

Willows and Wild Turkey’s ....and so as morning’s dawn comes singing, an awakening song deep within my soul of desire, my spirit was the first one to sit up in taking notice, of what was first heard in this early morning breeze…. —-” rise up and give a shout most glorious workers of wood, is not the sound of branches swaying, as culled from the vastness of forest storehouses understood, while you lay listening to carillon’s playing ”.... ......

"PROVIDERE" --by RusticWoodArt #5: Providere, a Work In Process

951 days ago by frank | 6 comments »

Providere, a Work In Process Well I finished roughing out a shape of the last of four legs last night with the drawknife, and I thought I would post a picture of where the ‘in the process’ of Providere now stands. 1) Cherry backsplash, needs to enter into it’s hand sanding phase, starting with #120 grit….and ending with some slurpies…. 2) Table top, needs to be worked some more on sides with a timber slick to get a better trueness…. 3) End board...

Thorsen House #2: The details are a little rustic

952 days ago by dennis mitchell | 17 comments »

The photos aren’t the best, but here is my update on the Greene and Greene table. Yes I went rustic. I got thinking (think…think…think) and I became interested in translating some of the details to a rustic style. I have a very old cheap band saw so I’ve not done much re-sawing. I’ve never done a breadboard end. Notice I book matched the top. I’m using pine from an old corral and a few pine branches from my firewood pile for the legs. The pegs are well drie...

this artisan house #3: two more for the kitchen

985 days ago by scottb | 10 comments »

Now I have a pair of tongs and a pair of spurtles right next to the stove. Why do I seem to be making my own tools in pairs? At least I think I’ll get more use out of the tongs than the (so far unused) spurtles. At least they were educational when I was learning how to turn them! I won’t stop at two tongs though. I have a pair of whisk style tongs with plastic handles that have broken. I should be able to epoxy the business end of the tool into a matching oak handle. The...

this artisan house #2: more from the artisan kitchen

1060 days ago by scottb | 2 comments »

The two spurtles I made last fall in a woodturning class. The top one is oak the bottom is cherry. Both are finished with walnut oil, and so far remain unused. I’ve only seen Alton Brown over on the Food Network use one to make oatmeal, or perhaps it was haggis. I just don’t seem to make enough of either to neccessitate two spurtles! The turner, my brother-in-law liberated from a broken cutting board. Maple. I posted this entry pretty much verbatim over at wordpress (oh ...

this artisan house #1: artisan household

1062 days ago by scottb | 3 comments »

Back in my lumberjocks interview, I mentioned one of my lifelong goals was to fill the house with useful items made by myself, as well as other artists and artisans. (while paring down all the cheaply made, hand-me-down, and mass manufactured items) Here’s a quick first look at how things have been shaping up over the past several years. My wifes cousin, Tim made these pottery bowls as a wedding gift, even stamped them with his own chop (signature) before firing and glazing. T...
