New Shop

02-15-2015 09:34 AM by Edwardnorton | 6 comments »

Now that our kids are grown I retired. Sold all of our 35 rental homes, sold and moved out of original home to move into a much smaller one. Our original home was 7,000 sq. ft. and the new one is a mere 2,500 with a 2 car garage but I do have a 10 acre lawn to build on. Only thing I’ve missed from our old home is the 55×70 shop I had so I’ve decided to have another built. My new one will be 70×70. The tools I have are an old Hitachi table saw, Hitachi 12 inch bandsaw, Dewalt mitersaw a...

New shop/garage

06-15-2014 01:23 AM by BMichs75 | 10 comments »

Me and my wife are close to finalizing everything on the purchase of our first home. Unfortunately there is no space for my shop. There is an attached two car garage but not nearly as large as I need for the tools I have acquired over the last 12 months. The place I am renting now has a sizable 26×34 garage that I use for my shop. Therefore I am planning a shop build. I am thinking of a 30×40 or something close. I worked in residential construction in high school and have a very clo...

Woodshop Build #2: My Space

03-04-2014 12:59 AM by VarnellWoodworks | 8 comments »

A lot of you are probably used to seeing woodshops full of tools and sawdust. Some even have woodshops that the brothers Green would be jealous of. Well, I have neither. In my first blog in this series, I shared my opinions on table saws and told you which one I was purchasing. Today I will be talking about the space that will eventually become my woodshop. As you can see, it looks more like a garage than a woodshop but I’m going to change that over the course of the next few...

Woodshop Build #1: Table Saw

02-22-2014 12:18 AM by VarnellWoodworks | 5 comments »

Just like many woodworkers out there, I am obsessed with my tools. They perform a function in my shop but they are more than just functional. They provide a sense of pride and aesthetic beauty that only my fellow woodworkers can understand. We spend countless hours mulling over specs. reviews, online videos, pricing, and countless other factors to find that perfect addition to the shop. When we find that perfect hand tool or piece of machinery, we obsess over fine tuning, adding accessori...

Woodshop Build, Varnell Woodworks

02-19-2014 04:56 AM by VarnellWoodworks | 2 comments »

I am jumping into my woodworking career with both feet. Unfortunately, this is not cheap and I do not have any tools worth anything. Also, having a handicap, I am on a very limited income. So, what is a woodworker to do? Start small, build up tools one at a time, accumulate better tools as you go. This is the plan, however, I need to start somewhere and my income only pays the bills that I have. I have found a possible source for start up expenses. I just signed up for a Crowd Funding webs...

Garage to Work Shop Conversion #8: The Rebuild Begins

If you haven’t kept up, take a look at the forum entry ””Woodshop Disaster Today””:http://lumberjocks.com/topics/55735 Taking advantage of the situation to do more work on the shop. In years past, I busted up and hauled away (by hand, one truck load at a time), the cracked and heaved concrete floor. It was so bad, you could not even take a step without either dropping or climbing 6” either way. After it was removed, I spread and compacted 15 tons of crus...
