Making a Violin #3: Sides, or 'Ribs' ~ Bending & Gluing

1378 days ago by RonPeters | 7 comments »

Ok, I’m back… Had a bit of an issue with the bending iron. It seems it is rather delicate and putting it on high (10) is a no no. It’s a Watlow ‘Firerod’ embedded in the aluminum tower. The current flow at 10 apparently burns out the element? It requires about an hour to get to bending temperature – and had I read the sheet that it came with… It was repaired free of charge and henceforth I will be careful to mind the dial! Nothing past 5 from no...

575 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 3 comments »

In my last video I showed you all the renovation of the old shop space, during that renovation, I made some recess cavities in one wall of the shop. In this video I walk you through the steps of making the recess shelf unit to go into those cavities. These recess shelves are not just for the shop, they can be used in the home as well! Add some glass shelves and you have a nice knick-knack display shelf, or use them around the home for any organizing needs.

My workflow always decreases towards the end ...

1807 days ago by xylosapiens | 8 comments »

Although all my previous designing, my efforts to get the piece of furniture to the very best end I can, usually met lots of minor cuestions to be solved, before finishing the job to my complete satisfaction. And this is the reason why the work sticks to the bench towards the end. Actually I’m never 100% satisfy. That’s the price I pay for the personal discoverys that represent my designs. Others don’t find it that much important, but it i...

Build a Steam Box

390 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 8 comments »

Recently I purchased a Steam Bending Kit from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware so I could try out some Steam Bending. Bending wood is something I have never tried before and is out of my comfort zone. I wanted to dive into this area of woodworking and challenge myself as well as learn something new. So of the various forms of wood bending (Laminated Bending, Milled Bending, Steam Bending) I chose steam bending to be my first attempt. The kit I purchased included the reservoir, hose, and so...

What Is Burl?

712 days ago by OregonBurls | 9 comments »

What Is Burl? I have discovered that this question is the most searched question for burls on the internet. Over 140,000 times world wide per month. So I read what Wikipedia’s definition is and found out that they are not clear and in some details are wrong in their definition. So I am going to attempt to clear the muddy waters. First of all Wikipedia says: “A burl (American English) or bur or burr (used in all non-US English speaking countries) is a tree growth in which the grain ha...

Tree growth "vortex"

1165 days ago by tswoodwizard | 3 comments »

OK, maybe all of my wood-tec type friends out on LJ,s can help me figure this out. I’ve allways been fascinated with the dynamics of curing and drying wood after the harvesting process. One to overcome is of cource the growth vortex that occures in some species and not in others. One question I have is this, Is there a right-hand vortex that occures above the equator as opposed to a left hand one bellow the equator? When a tree wiggles and struggles up out of the grownd, It also “...
