Well I finally finished the Tablesaw Base, trying to film during rain storms is almost impossible with the ambient noise from the rain hitting the metal roof.. but I waited it out, and am very happy with the outcome.. Here is a look at the final steps of building this base
With the holidays right around the corner, I thought it was a perfect time for a contest. I want you guys to build a Keepsake or Jewelry Box. It can be any Shape and size, just be creative. The Contest is from October 3, 2012 – December 3, 2012 So there is plenty of time to get out out in the shop and get building. We have some great prizes to give away thanks to the support of our contest sponsors. Laguna Tools Woodworkers Guild of America Rockler Woodworking & Hardware A Simple...
Ok, I’ve been busy with life and could only get to the violin as weather permitted, that is until I insulated the garage and installed an IR heat lamp which takes the chill off the air. This is the maple back. I’ve carved guides using templates I made out of aluminum. After aligning the guides to the plate surface it’s a simple matter of carving away the excess and blending. There are 6 templates. 1 through 5 are horizontal left to right with the last spanning the length....
Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....
Hey everyone! I just finished this Video to teach the basics of discovering good figured wood.Hope you like it and would love your feed back and additions. ThanksGregOregonburls

This modular bookshelf is a great project for beginning woodworkers and you veteran woodworkers as well. Requiring only 2 boards to build and a limited amount of tools, this project can be made in a day or a weekend. the design can be modified by building more cubes or changing the orientation of the unit itself. Add some color and it makes a great display and shelving unit for a kids room. Give it a try.
When a viewer sent me a comment asking if I could make a First Aid Cabinet for the workshop, I thought to myself. “Yea what a perfect project to do”, because I am setting up the new shop, and it was the one thing missing. The First aid Cabinet was made almost entirely out of Pallet Wood. Oh yea! my first Pallet Project! http://www.asimpledesignofocala.com – Websitehttp://www.ufoww.com – The United Federation of Woodworkers Member Sitehttp://www.twitter...
Hey to all you LJs, Consideration #1 I thought that I would start a series on drying green domestic burl wood. With burl wood the end grain is going every direction and is under more internal pressure thus making it want to self destruct. Green burls or straight grain have two places where water finds its home. Inside the cells and outside the cells, this is called bound water (inside the cells) and free water (outside the cell walls). Free water is easier to escape than the bound wa...
Consideration #2 If you have fruit tree burls or burls like madrone there are two ways you can semi-stabilize the burl.1. Pressure cook the block:a. I have a friend in New York who gets 12×12 x 6 blocks of Madrone and when he gets them the first thing he does is throws them in the pressure cooker for one hour.b. Let the water cool down until you can comfortably take the blocks out with your hands. Then re-wax them until ready to turn the bloc...
