Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil
So lets cut to the center of the fruit….like cutting to the quick, and talk about China Wood Oil, wood nut oil or just plain ‘tung oil’. Finishing the lidI wanted to get the lid to fit tight, so I cut a piece of ply to fit the box and then centered it under the lid. I used this to scribe my layout lines.I taped the corners of the box to help minimize tearout. Pushstick was used for actual operation. So, I decided to start an interesting project a few weeks ago and I thought I’d share my progress. I figured it would be neat to build a wood briefcase. Now, I know that in today’s business society people tend to use shoulder bags, “soft” briefcases or messenger bags to tote around their documents. But I figured, “what the hell, if anything it will be fun.”

Shellacin’I cleaned up 90% shop dust by vac and broom and then run the overhead air filter for a bit before finishing. I protected the workbench with plastic. The panels are raised up on scrap sticks. You can see a bottle of Transtint (Dark mission brown) in the foreground.
I add denatured alcohol to a container and then add the shellac to the consistency of a 1lb or so cut. Very thin.

Catch upThis is a project I started from quartersawn white oak scraps about three years ago. However, I got involved in other things, so it has been bouncing around in storage getting slightly damaged during the interim. This was an interesting project that I worked on a few years ago. The photo above show the panels in the original room at Henwood Priory, Warwickshire, England. It is the only thing I had to go on. The following pictures are of a Valley Oak that was approximately one hundred and fifty years old and five feet in diameter. It lived its life in the back yard of a homeowner in Walnut Creek, CA. In July of this year it fell over onto the garage of said homeowner. We are all glad that it wasn’t the actual house. The final installment of the Steamer Trunk series. I apply the faux walnut straps, apply the water-based finish using my HVLP turbine, and install the tansu hardware. All in all, this was a great project that really reinforces simple frame and panel construction. At the end of the video, I even have a little update on Duane’s progress on his trunks. In this episode, I go over some pre-finishing tips and finish the inside of the trunk. I then go through the entire assembly and glueup process from start to finish. I then discuss the trunk’s lid, which is different from the original plan. You can download a Sketchup plan for the lid here.
