"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #26: Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil

454 days ago by frank | 19 comments »

Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil So lets cut to the center of the fruit….like cutting to the quick, and talk about China Wood Oil, wood nut oil or just plain ‘tung oil’. And since we’re talking in the language of botany, maybe it would be best too first say that tung oil is not a true nut, but is a fruit that comes to us as a drupe or what is also called ‘stone fruit’. Definition of a drupe….stone fruit is: ’’a one-seeded indehisc...

Duane's Steamer Trunk #1: Duane's Steamer Trunk Pt. 1

276 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 8 comments »

On to our next project: a steamer trunk. This project was built and filmed in an effort to assist my new friend, Duane. The video gives the whole story. And here is a forum thread about the project: Wood Whisperer Forum This first part focuses on building the frames that make up the sides of the trunk case. I cover numerous topics, but I spend a significant amount of time on grain matching. And since I don’t work with plans on the show very often, I thought it would be good...

Grandpa's Box #3: Finishing Up

518 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Finishing the lidI wanted to get the lid to fit tight, so I cut a piece of ply to fit the box and then centered it under the lid. I used this to scribe my layout lines.I taped the corners of the box to help minimize tearout. Pushstick was used for actual operation. I busted out Wonder Boy for trimming the lid to perfection.Finished rabbet. (Note Kristin’s toes)I cut and glued more keys to secure the miters.I used a file to follow the plane this time. As long as you work away from the co...

Briefcase #1: The Idea

119 days ago by Chris Wright | 6 comments »

So, I decided to start an interesting project a few weeks ago and I thought I’d share my progress. I figured it would be neat to build a wood briefcase. Now, I know that in today’s business society people tend to use shoulder bags, “soft” briefcases or messenger bags to tote around their documents. But I figured, “what the hell, if anything it will be fun.” Like the majority of my projects, it all starts with a drawing. I planned the sides be a...

Little Journey's #3: Applying Shellac and Hiding Sapwood

536 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Shellacin’I cleaned up 90% shop dust by vac and broom and then run the overhead air filter for a bit before finishing. I protected the workbench with plastic. The panels are raised up on scrap sticks. You can see a bottle of Transtint (Dark mission brown) in the foreground. I add denatured alcohol to a container and then add the shellac to the consistency of a 1lb or so cut. Very thin. I am padding on the shellac with a clean t-shirt scrap wrapped around another scrap. I also ...

Little Journey's #1: Back Log

544 days ago by gizmodyne | 10 comments »

Catch upThis is a project I started from quartersawn white oak scraps about three years ago. However, I got involved in other things, so it has been bouncing around in storage getting slightly damaged during the interim. I took it out to inspect it and start the finishing process; aka actually completing the piece. This is from “More Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” by Robert Lange. The Little Journey’s Bookstand was originally made by Roycroft to to hold a set of books...

17th Century Jacobean Oak paneled room #1: Preface

635 days ago by woodwkr | 5 comments »

This was an interesting project that I worked on a few years ago. The photo above show the panels in the original room at Henwood Priory, Warwickshire, England. It is the only thing I had to go on. One wall had a fireplace that someone must have blacked out before the auction because it was not part of the sale.( a note: the photos that I use in this blog are rather large so you can see some of the detail. just click on them to see the whole photo and click again to see them actual size )...

Beautiful Valley (White) Oak

39 days ago by California Urban Lumber | 6 comments »

The following pictures are of a Valley Oak that was approximately one hundred and fifty years old and five feet in diameter. It lived its life in the back yard of a homeowner in Walnut Creek, CA. In July of this year it fell over onto the garage of said homeowner. We are all glad that it wasn’t the actual house. However, In the battle of tree vs. garage, the eighty thousand pound tree won hands down! Evergreen Tree Service of Antioch, CA removed the “remains” of the tree,...

Duane's Steamer Trunk #4: Duane's Steamer Trunk #4

232 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 3 comments »

The final installment of the Steamer Trunk series. I apply the faux walnut straps, apply the water-based finish using my HVLP turbine, and install the tansu hardware. All in all, this was a great project that really reinforces simple frame and panel construction. At the end of the video, I even have a little update on Duane’s progress on his trunks. Things are coming along nicely. Best of luck to you Duane! And if you would like to donate to the cause, please check out the fo...

Duane's Steamer Trunk #3: Duane's Steamer Trunk #3

244 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 4 comments »

In this episode, I go over some pre-finishing tips and finish the inside of the trunk. I then go through the entire assembly and glueup process from start to finish. I then discuss the trunk’s lid, which is different from the original plan. You can download a Sketchup plan for the lid here. Once the lid is glued up, I realize that rushing through this project has resulted in a number of errors. So I fix them. I know how you guys love it when I make mistakes so you won’t be disa...
