"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #26: Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil

456 days ago by frank | 19 comments »

Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil So lets cut to the center of the fruit….like cutting to the quick, and talk about China Wood Oil, wood nut oil or just plain ‘tung oil’. And since we’re talking in the language of botany, maybe it would be best too first say that tung oil is not a true nut, but is a fruit that comes to us as a drupe or what is also called ‘stone fruit’. Definition of a drupe….stone fruit is: ’’a one-seeded indehisc...

Little Journey's #1: Back Log

546 days ago by gizmodyne | 10 comments »

Catch upThis is a project I started from quartersawn white oak scraps about three years ago. However, I got involved in other things, so it has been bouncing around in storage getting slightly damaged during the interim. I took it out to inspect it and start the finishing process; aka actually completing the piece. This is from “More Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” by Robert Lange. The Little Journey’s Bookstand was originally made by Roycroft to to hold a set of books...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #4: "Coalescing With Wood"

587 days ago by frank | 10 comments »

Coalescing With Wood ....my life is lived as a worker of wood, these stories i tell are the fruits of my dreams, where it not so i would have told you so, just as gifted stories tweak my imagination in the all that i am… —-yes i laugh at my-self for the rustic wood spirit i am, just as when i pause in the woods for silence, and often out here i can hear the ancient ones laughing also, these are as much their stories of laughter as mine…. ....stories are told among t...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #12: "Found a Power Tool"

686 days ago by frank | 10 comments »

Found a Power Tool ....eeeh, eeeh, eeeh, eeeh, eeeh….was the sounding of rasping, vibrating, sonic, electronic, springboard, greeting that pulled me up from my earlier place of peace-full slumbering dream-scape, into the now of later remembering, that this is my inhabited world of 2008. So once again I hit the snooze button and told myself that just a few more minutes would not matter all that much as I felt the coldness of the early morning air, shifting around within the closure of...

Duane's Steamer Trunk #1: Duane's Steamer Trunk Pt. 1

278 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 8 comments »

On to our next project: a steamer trunk. This project was built and filmed in an effort to assist my new friend, Duane. The video gives the whole story. And here is a forum thread about the project: Wood Whisperer Forum This first part focuses on building the frames that make up the sides of the trunk case. I cover numerous topics, but I spend a significant amount of time on grain matching. And since I don’t work with plans on the show very often, I thought it would be good...

Little Journey's #2: Fuming!

540 days ago by gizmodyne | 8 comments »

I had a little more handwork to do on the Little Journey’s Bookstand. I fiddled with the tusks a bit. I originally sanded the piece to 400 but decided to sand to 220 this time. The loose tenons/tusks took forever to sand and detail. Fuming Time I have always wanted to try this. Two years ago I had a student whose dad owned a blueprint shop. He gave me a large bottle of super strength ammonia. I had bought an ammonia respirator in preparation for the job. I build a simple te...

Beautiful Valley (White) Oak

41 days ago by California Urban Lumber | 6 comments »

The following pictures are of a Valley Oak that was approximately one hundred and fifty years old and five feet in diameter. It lived its life in the back yard of a homeowner in Walnut Creek, CA. In July of this year it fell over onto the garage of said homeowner. We are all glad that it wasn’t the actual house. However, In the battle of tree vs. garage, the eighty thousand pound tree won hands down! Evergreen Tree Service of Antioch, CA removed the “remains” of the tree,...

Briefcase #1: The Idea

121 days ago by Chris Wright | 6 comments »

So, I decided to start an interesting project a few weeks ago and I thought I’d share my progress. I figured it would be neat to build a wood briefcase. Now, I know that in today’s business society people tend to use shoulder bags, “soft” briefcases or messenger bags to tote around their documents. But I figured, “what the hell, if anything it will be fun.” Like the majority of my projects, it all starts with a drawing. I planned the sides be a...

A small conference table - the build #1: Preparing the boards

308 days ago by Al Navas | 6 comments »

From my blog: Now I start the full-size conference table for a client. This table will be 2X the size of this one I shared here, and submitted to the Winter 2009 Woodworking Awards: But I will change the edge treatment as follows: I want to be able do preliminary grain matching, before cutting the boards closer to size. Since at this stage I am not flattening the boards, the #3 is perfect and fast for the job: Rough boards are not perfectly flat, so my planing stop did...
