Whirligig Renewal -Fiddler

One thing is sure, if you leave something outside 6 months of the year, it’s going to need maintenance. My very first whirligig, the fiddler came in last year looking pretty sad in the paint department. His bow arm also needed some repair. So I removed the arm and made a new one, using the old as a pattern. Even though it’s made of thin plywood, it has held up pretty well due to my using oil base paint on it. Current Project #25: Two at Once

In this photo you can see the two things I’m currently working on. On the left, I’m re-habbing my very first whirligig. The paint needs refreshing and I’ve replaced the bow arm of the fiddler. On the right there are 4 coasters that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle to become a trivet. (I’m also painting our old rusty wheelbarrow, but that’s outside.) No big shakes.

I got a start on a whirligig for the 2014 Whirligig Wars. After the proof of concept, I got a few of the parts cut out and then decided some of the parts need to be out of thinner wood. Then a friend of ours passed away. This friend was what I call our church widow. She has absolutely no family, but a prepaid arrangement to pay for the cremation. Well, I know what my next project will be: a whirligig. Laney Shaughnessy of A Simple Design of Ocala, in Cooperation with Steve Ramsey of WoodWorking for Mere Mortals has officially announced the 2014 Whirligig Wars.
