Recently we embarked on a challenging request from a prestigious client to create a dining room table border that measures 12’ x 16’ x 1’ entirely out of wenge and Gaboon ebony. The border will go into a newly -installed floor of hand-distressed (and bleached!) American walnut. My son is the craftsman and I’m moral support, and R&D so to speak. I’ve veen in the flooring industry by marriage for many years so although I have a fairly good knowledge base on ...

After seeing a few of my other veneer works, I was approached to make a Red Sox wall hanging for someone to give as a gift. Seeing as how I am still looking for more experience on this marquetry kick I’m on, I decided to go for it. Now, I’m not a fan of Baseball period, so don’t let this logo make you think I’m a Red Sox fan. We decided on a rather large size of 24”x24” overall, which will be more beneficial to me for the small pieces that needed cutting...
My mom approached me about doing something for my father for Father’s day. Only requirements were that it was to be something for their boat, and that it have the boat’s name on it. For the design, I decided that a prominent Compass ...

I use this one as a smoother for some woods. It is short-ish for a smoother at 8 1/2”, but does its job quite well. Has a nice weight to it in use – not too light and not too heavy. Feels very solid. Made from wenge, with beech stripes and an ipe sole. Finish is tung oil and wax The bed is 50 degrees and the iron is another of the LV wooden plane irons. I cut it down with a Dremel and about 10 of those tiny cutting wheels. —Mark Kornell, Kornell ...
I wanted plane #3 to be another block plane, but I wanted it to be a different kind of block. By this point, I’d done a lot of reading about planes in general and plane-making, and some of it was starting to sink in. Low angle, bevel-up planes sounded like a good thing because of the versatility, so I hit on the idea of making one from wood. The Internet is a wonderful resource for finding information on just about any conceivable topic. Usually, there is too much information, re...
