A walnut sofa table with Jacobean influences

687 days ago by John Fry | 15 comments »

First I want to thank everyone who visited and responded to my last two project blogs; A small table that took a whole lot of work A veneering extravaganza! As always I welcome your comments AND critiques on this latest project. This commissioned sofa table’s concept was borrowed from a late seventeenth century round gate-leg table. The client wanted it in a dark walnut with “antique shading”, and asked that the back of the table be as detailed as the front so it could be u...

Bhutanese Inspired Bookcase

695 days ago by lobbster | 8 comments »

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. Bhutanese temples are characterized by their inward sloping walls and graduated windows.Front View: I used a combination of the golden ratio and Hambidge Progression to come up with the dimensions. The bookcase is open on both sides and can be plac...

Bookcase Design Challenge

695 days ago by Nick_Stepp | 0 comments »

I learned about the LumberJocks/Popular Woodworking bookcase design challenge through The Wood Whisperer website just as I was finishing drawing this bookcase plan. It was designed to be the first library space for my best friend’s baby, who is expected in mid-June. For that project, I will likely use rosewood solids and black walnut sheet goods (for contrast and cost benefits). This design, however, is for walnut solids and hard/rock maple sheet goods. In terms of design, the bookcase is...

Greene and Greene Bookcase Challenge04

697 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

Posted as a blog entry, for the official contest. For the Challenge04 I decided to design a Greene and Greene Bookcase. The Greene brothers, Charles and Henry decided to create a new and fresh style different from the Arts and Craft designs that was becoming popular in that time. Some of their designs were influenced by some Asian furniture. I opted then to build a Greene and Greene Style bookcase using breadboards and splines for the top but also creating a mid rail in the middl...

Being Freed Up. Seeing wood and woodworking in a new light.

702 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

Ok, I promised myself and my wife that I would quit typing so much and work in the shop more. So, I’ve been fairly quiet, only admiring all of the growth of LJ, and the projects and blogs a few times a day quietly. This growing bunch of folks has been truly inspirational for me. But, when I type too much, I don’t make things, bills come in the mailbox, upset spouse, thus the silence. After all, what I have to say isn’t all that important anyway. Something else my wife t...
