The Craftsman's Path #16: Twin boxes in Cherry, Maple and Walnut

367 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 6 comments »

Not nearly as much time in the shop as I would like lately. I did however, get a bit of time in between other things for a small project. I did two twin boxes with some offcuts. Take a look at the post on my blog for details. Thanks for reading!

Gingerbread Houses #2: Construction

368 days ago by cheller | 2 comments »

A couple of class nights (adult ed open workshop) provided me with the time to mill the necessary lumber for the houses. I was also able to cut the 45 degree angles on the roof parts and the top edge of the walls. The remainder of the work to date has been done with my scroll saw, a drill, hand saws, chisels and planes. Here’s an early dry fit. The ridge beam fits into a slot in the gable ends, and is notched to lock the ends together. The walls are waiting to be cut down leaving...

Gingerbread Houses #1: Explanation and Plans

369 days ago by cheller | 5 comments »

Each year on the first weekend of December I travel to New Jersey to spend the weekend with my nephew, who is now 6. We go swimming at the hotel, have lunch out, and work on a project. The first project, when he was 2, was a set of shelves for the very small first floor bathroom of their house. He didn’t help a lot with that, although he was very sure to make sure that I fixed the bathroom door which had to be removed from the hinges to provide enough room to work in the tiny bathroo...

SketchUp Challenge - A Month Late

384 days ago by cheller | 7 comments »

I’m really late with this. August and September were very busy months, mostly related to upheaval at work. In the insanity I had trouble deciding on an inspiration and even more trouble finding the time and energy to focus on learning SketchUp. About a week before the deadline I finally came up with an inspiration. But despite my best efforts I couldn’t get it together to submit on time. The final straw was primarily mental (no wise cracks, please). I really didn’t wan...

Project - Chunky Boxes #3: Milling the Lumber part 2

384 days ago by Dekker | 0 comments »

At the end of my last blog entry for this project, I had my pieces rough milled. Well, since then I have given the sides of the boxes its 30’ miter, and used my recently-tuned miter saw to cut the sides with nice clean miters. Once that was done, I needed to put the finger-hole for removing the lid onto the “front” of the box. To do this, I needed a 3/4” forstner bit, which has a nice flat bottom. To get the curve I needed, I needed to place the center of the bit 3/32&...

Project - Chunky Boxes #1: Milling the Lumber

391 days ago by Dekker | 4 comments »

While my other boxes are receiving their final finishes, I have decided to start on another pair of boxes. The design is based on something I saw in a book, but I can not remember which at this moment. They are short (probably only 1-1/4” tall) and not very long (about 3-1/2”) with a slab lid that is removed with the use of a finger-hole on the side wall of the carcase. The nice thing about the design is its frugality: It only takes one piece of wood 17” long and 1-1/4...

Project - Lever-Action Boxes #1: Committing Myself

400 days ago by Dekker | 3 comments »

Well, I’ve finally gone and done it. After blogging about books on boxes , I got the itch to make some boxes! I haven’t delved extensively into boxes, and it has been ages, so it’s like starting new again. My wife makes jewellery that she sells online and at craft shows. She has a show sometime in late October, and another in early November, and I thought it would be a great idea to offer some jewellery boxes next to the jewellery. I therefore have a motivational deadline...

Trip to Kansas City

402 days ago by DrsHobby | 6 comments »

Well, my wife and I went to Kansas City today to visit some friends that moved their this past summer. I recently gave them a cutting board listed as a project here, and like cajunpen suggested they don’t want to use it. We spent a good part of Saturday at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and it is worth the trip. The museum was very impressive. My wife being an artist loved it and so did I. The collection was extensive and the new addition the Bloch building was awesome. I did however wa...

This isn’t much of a blog, but here are some drawings (for those who were interested) with the dimensions for the guitar stand I posted a few weeks ago.
