My under $100 wide drum sander (a work in progress)

1679 days ago by Daren Nelson | 22 comments »

I mill wide boards. I have been slipping some of them in the side door of a local cabinet shop when I need them surfaced, but that is getting to be a hassle. I decided to make a wide drum sander. Not really a thickness sander since I mill my own lumber, just a sander to take the sawmill marks out. I had just about everything. A 1 1/2 horse motor, some wood for the frame, belts and pulleys…I did have to buy a couple pillow block bearings. Here it is almost complete (I still need to built ...

Tap and Screw Jig Tutorial #1: Intro/Screw Dimensioning

546 days ago by CartersWhittling | 49 comments »

Hello. This is a new blog series I am doing. The topic is how to make a tap and screw jig for making large wooden screws. To start I will say that I hope many of the readers find this series useful because they can use the knowledge to make their own screws and nuts for clamps, vises, presses, etc… It took my friend and I hours upon hours, spread over months to finally get a functioning tap and screw jig. So my purpose in writing this blog is to give other woodworkers the proper inst...

Router-Based Inlay

1147 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 23 comments »

Inlay is a great way to adorn your woodworking projects. Even the simplest item can become incredibly compelling if it features a well-executed inlay. With the right materials and techniques, its just like painting with wood. Only “non-artistic” folks like myself can actually do it! If you are in the N. California are, be sure to take one of David Marks' marquetry and inlay classes. And below are a few items that I recommend using for this process: 1/16 Inch Router Bi...

My Small Shop Tips, Tricks and Jigs #1: Make a Crosscut Jig (for circular saw)

845 days ago by HardWood | 5 comments »

While it would be great to invest in a multi-function sliding table saw for precision cross cuts with precision guides, rails, stops, etc., such is not always possible for whatever reason. In this video I will show you my version of a $7000 cross cutting jig less than a 30-minute investment to make it. Enjoy…

Great Woodworking Videos #1: Amazing Videos of a Master Japanese Craftsman at work

879 days ago by Blake | 41 comments »

I was clicking around the net when I came across these videos. They are some of the best videos I’ve ever found of a real Japanese craftsman using traditional techniques to build a project from start to finish. In this series of 5 videos he builds a beautiful small chest of drawers (most likely a jewelry box) using only hand tools. I am in awe at how the techniques he uses are so simple yet so effective. I wish I spoke Japanese. If anyone could repost these videos translated to engli...

Let's Build a Dedicated Dado Sled for the Table Saw

1013 days ago by Bob Simmons | 6 comments »

The following is an addition to The Apprentice and The Journeyman woodworking video series, Let’s Build. The dedicated dado sled for the table saw is a highly versatile woodworking shop fixture that can expand the woodworking approaches used by many woodworkers. Dado blades are used on the table saw instead of a typical saw blade and the dado blades are often said to be “stacked.” This term implies that the dado blades, chippers, and shims are combined to create a cert...

Craftsman Bungalow Restoration #15: Summer 07 --- Kitchen and Den Weeks 3 -5

2126 days ago by gizmodyne | 8 comments »

Slow DownThings actually slowed down a lot during these weeks from our perspective, as the amount of work in the kitchen apperaed to be moving slowly. Plaster work and sanding are not exactly exciting. Lots of sanding. We spent time running around buying tile and so on. We went shopping….Our new (old) stove. It is tiny. One of the guys that they sent did a terrible job preparing the wood in the porch so when they stained there were evil sanding marks from the palm sander in many s...
