STANLEY BENCH PLANE RESTORATION Click here for large format version More information available on my woodworking blog & podcast The Folding Rule Show Step #1 – Cleaning & Rust Removal I have been inspired by a number of resources to start using my hand planes and start on the slippery slope of a hand plane collection. Not the least of whom has been Wayne, our own Lumberjocks plane guru. Of course I have also explored a number of websites including our good friend Phi...

Dovetailing a box

345 days ago by Alin Dobra | 31 comments »

Hello, In this blog I spend almost 40 minutes in four videos explaining how I cut dovetails. Since I give most of the explanations in the video, I will not repeat them in writing. There are multiple ways you can use these videos:1. See how somebody else is cutting dovetails and maybe get some idea how to improve your technique2. Learn how to cut dovetails from scratch3. Confirm some of the frustrations/solutions you have Use the comments to give extra hints or talk about what works/...

Furniture Design #1: Fibonacci gauge

474 days ago by David | 23 comments »

1 • 1 • 2 • 3 • 5 • 8 • 13 • 21 • 34 – The Fibonacci Sequence I have been fascinated with The Fibonacci Sequence and The Golden Rectangle for some time. I finally got around to building a Fibonacci Gauge that was featured in WOOD Magazine. The guage maintains a consatnt proportion of 1:1.618 between the points. It is used to help determine visually appealing proportional dimensions. I am looking forward to using the guage in future projects. Follow the text below for so...

How I Make a Lazy Susan

50 days ago by WoodMosaics | 18 comments »

Now before I get started on this little demonstration of how I do it, let me caution you on a couple things. IF you try anything like this, take the plate that your saw blade comes up through and close that hole completely up with a thin piece of wood. Make sure it is even with the top, with no gaps and no lips to catch the pieces. You want it smooth. Then with a “Hollow ground plywood blade” come up from the bottom so you have no gap between the blade and the wood. You may have to do this a ...

Christopher Schwarz at Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event [video]

217 days ago by kem | 10 comments »

Last week’s event in Chicago was fantastic. Being a novice, I really learned a lot from the many demonstrations and from getting to play with some fine tools. A couple of highlights for me were being able to try out Chris Schwarz’s ebony infill smoothing plane (by Wayne Anderson) and hearing Jeff Miller discuss the design and production of his beautiful Cantata chair. I was disciplined enough not to buy anything, although when I got home I ordered a large shoulder plane (Veritas, ...

Jigs and Fixtures #3: Shooting Board Basics - VIDEO

312 days ago by mot | 32 comments »

WayneC, Bob #2 and I, have had some conversations about shooting boards. The conversations don’t last long because we all agree with eachother. It’s really the death of conversation. However, some of the hand tool posts have netted some good questions on what a shooting board is, how it works, what it does and how you use it. I put together a 15 minute overview of the basics of the shooting board. Please note, the shooting board is a tool that will have unlimited uses in yo...
