Shop stuff #119: Bent lamination guitar stand in Walnut and Ash

03-24-2018 01:42 PM by JimDaddyO | 0 comments »

You just have to keep trying new things. I thought I would try making a bent lamination for the first time, and, since my son in law plays guitar, a guitar stand seems to be a logical place to try. Here in part one, I prep the stock and get the bent lamination done up. It was a fairly straight forward process. I was expecting some spring back when I took it out of the clamps, but that assumption was incorrect as it held shape great. I am also trying out some new things with my videos. S...

Video Woodworkers I Watch #19: Are there any left? (rant)

03-21-2018 06:47 PM by Dave Rutan | 8 comments »

Lately I’ve been paring down the YouTube woodworks that I regularly watch. It seems that many of the ones I enjoyed have either decided to showcase their CNC’s, go into blacksmithing, go long format, or just vlog instead of build projects. Some have realized that you can’t get rich doing videos and have pretty much given up. The few that I watch with any loyalty are Steve Ramsey (when he pits out a project video), Matthias Wandel and mostly John Heisz. I like John’s...

Shaker Style Table

03-20-2018 12:58 AM by wrenchhead | 4 comments »

I made this tapered leg table to have a place to work, study and edit. The top is made of Sapele and the base is maple finished with milk paint. It was a fun project using a variety of machines and hand tools. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNId8i-sS3o

Octave Mandolin #20: Custom Octave Mandolin

03-15-2018 03:10 AM by Tomy Hovington | 1 comment »

This project was commissioned and was quite the undertaking. My customer wanted a Octave Mandolin with a archtop and flat backboard. Since there was no blueprints to make such an instrument I had to do research, compile information and sketch my own drawing to even start the project. This build stretch over a year and a bit and was just completed. The wood used in this project is AAA quilted Maple back sides and neck, Engelmann AAA Spruce top, ebony fretboard, binding, and peghead veneer. Maho...

Small Shop Adventures #13: Hand Planing Trim Boards.

03-13-2018 01:55 AM by BrockF | 1 comment »

For the ceiling trim in my parents place I am going with 1×4 boards with a 1/2 inch square strip along the upper edge, all painted white. I am using poplar because it paints great and is such a pleasure to work with. One of the challenges I face is that the ceilings have a few spots where they are not exactly flat, either because of time or because of muddling, paint, repairs or both. This would be essentially invisible except when you try to put a trim board up. I can’t do...

Improved Taper Jig

03-08-2018 10:19 PM by wrenchhead | 3 comments »

I made this taper jig to replace the old metal one i have been using. This is a simple table saw jig that makes cutting tapered legs much safer. I have been cutting all of my tapers at the band saw because I wasn’t comfortable at the table saw. This jig will definitely speed up the table leg making process. Thanks for watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOlFJyplq6U

Shop stuff #118: Easy to make sanding sticks

03-08-2018 03:01 AM by JimDaddyO | 4 comments »

The project I am working on would be easier with some sanding sticks, so I made some. It’s quick and easy. You can use any grit you want, or mix them, and the wood can be anything handy. You can even rip them from 2 x stock or just about anything else. I happened to find something at the dollar store that fit the bill. View on YouTube
