How to find great figure wood other than Burl

1305 days ago by OregonBurls | 8 comments »

This is in addition to the burl blog I put on a week ago. Thank you for all the reads. This is to the best of my knowledge and I am still learning.I have found crazy figure in tree crotches. A tree crotch is where two branches come together. It is usually the piece that fire wood people don’t want because it doesn’t slit. That is because the crotch is the hardest part of the tree and the grain in going in different directions. It’s where you get what is called “feather”. “Haring bone, r...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #358: Busy Times, Good Times

719 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 8 comments »

I am a little slow out of the gate today, but it wasn’t without purpose. Yesterday was a very full day and I accomplished a lot. My early start paid off and although I thought that by the middle of the afternoon I would have a bit of a letdown and get tired, that didn’t really happy. I didn’t start cutting until late afternoon and finished up around ten. Even after that I was still excited about the project and got some of the general sanding done on it and the first coa...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #193: Getting "Unstuck" by Changing Gears

890 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 8 comments »

I really like when I get so involved in doing a project that I can’t wait to get up in the morning to get at it. Today was one of those days. After feeling kind of stuck for a while on what to do for someone special on my list, I finally got the idea on Saturday and since then it has grown like a well cared for seed and looks like it is going to be turning out to be a pretty cool project. I decided to paint a wooden sewing box for a friend of mine who loves to do counted cross stit...

Woodworking Contest - Whirligig Wars Winners

299 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 8 comments »

All in all it was a great event with a lot of great entries. I would like to thank all those who participated in the 1st Annual Whirligig Wars Contest. When I presented the idea of holding a whirligig contest to Steve Ramsey (Woodworking For Mere Mortals) he and I agreed it would be a fun summer event. The response was overwhelming with over 6000 video views of the videos relating to the contest and many great comments from woodworkers all over. So it was decided early on that this would be ...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #998: Progress Report

50 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 7 comments »

What an extremely productive weekend I had! It isn’t always that I can claim that so I am pretty darn proud of all that I accomplished over the last couple of days. It feels good to work hard and actually see some physical results of that work right in front of you. That isn’t always the case. There are many times when I seem to work hard and even though every minute of the day is spent ‘doing something’ there is little to show for it. But this week, it will be a bo...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #788: Do As I Say, Not As I Do

281 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 7 comments »

I never for a moment think that I have all the answers. In fact, I often think that the day I stop learning will be the day I take my last breath here on Earth. Sometimes learning something is an entirely new experience. We see something fresh and new and it is exciting to learn about it and expand our knowledge. We have a feeling of pride and accomplishment as we learn these new things, and it makes us feel great. Other times, we re-learn something that we knew in the past, but over ...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #352: Rambling and Some Pictures for Dennis

725 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 7 comments »

There is something about polar animals that enchant me. I don’t know what it is. I have always looked at them as creatures of great beauty. It strikes me as odd because as a painter, I am quite fond of color. I love painting wildlife and big cats and playing with the shading and tones and making them look realistic. Most of the Arctic animals are various shades of white and grey. You would think that would bore me. However, I did once paint a snow leopard in greyscale and it was ...
