Edited 8/21/09: A couple of years ago I took an intro class on wood carving. The school had on hand some carving benches for the students to use but, naturally, I had to make my own design. Below is the design that I came up with. It was small enough for me to lug to class and large enough to handle most of the carving projects that I anticipate doing. It also allowed me the flexibility to accommodate various sizes of work and be able to reposition them without unscrewing and re-screwing...

Monday morning came and found me pondering about the important things in life. Well, sort of…
As most of you would know by now, Lee Valley’s Veritas brand has come with a couple of new block planes, the first of their new ”Premium” Series. Aesthetic considerations apart—I am not very fond of the way they look, actually—they sure are a fine example of the highest precision engineering out there. As they claim in their website, ”the sole and sides are flat and square ...

Since the debate seems to rage onwards when it comes on how to sharpen a blade sharper than we need too… I figured I’d throw some more gasoline into the fire. But in order to get some good numbers I need some numbers!
What do I need?
What rate do you consume pads?
How many tools can you sharpen per pad?
What do you pay for your pad?
Of real interest would be how many inches of tools width you can sharpen per pad. So if you exclusively use 1 inch wide chi...

Well, MsDebbieP is at it again! Adding to her shop tours and inspections are visits to companies that support woodworkers!
Last week I had the privilege of speaking with Robin Lee, President of Lee Valley, one of our Summer Woodworking Awards sponsors.
Mr. Lee, heading the family business that was first started by his father Leonard Lee, carries on the family vision of providing quality customer service by “doing what is right” and by “making people happy”. This underlying goal can be f...

I got the tools today so I thought I would show you guys what I got. First you can try to guess the hidden objects. They are shown in their new protective coverings for storage as I am currently workshopless. And if that wasn’t a word before then I just created it.
They are the Lee Valley / Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane and the Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Block Plane in Bronze.
I actually got the Lie-Nielsen plane at Woodcraft a few weeks before the conference but I haven’t...

It’s interesting how it feels like you’re standing still when you’re working on already dry-fit parts for additional features. After all – at the end of the day when you look at all the parts – they seem to look just the way they did in the morning. bummer.
but even though things don’t seem that way somethings. Progress IS progress, and is one step closer to the finish line.
Today I implemented the hardware for the leg vise in the right leg (I’m...

Now that I received the tail vises for my workbench, I have modeled them in Sketchup so that I can play around with it for a more precise location and drilling plans before I have to physically deal with the heavy top material.
This model is design to be light and fast, and as such does not go into vast details such as screw spirals etc. Instead it is designed to be used for measurements and sizing, both in terms of the actual hardware measurements and shapes, and screw hole locations.
...

So for those of you who read my first post, heres the results! I decided to finish this part tonight because I remembered I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled tommorow morning, so I’ll be out of commision for a bit.
I spent about 35 minutes with the Veritas Mk2 jig. I started with the 1000 grit side and moved to the 4000 grit side. At the end I’ll post some pictures of the factory finish that came on the chisels.
This is the blade edge at 40X, notice that even when cleane...

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve seen so far when it comes to tools is to “Buy good tools, and know how to sharpen them.” I’ve reached the point where I can now gaze above the forest of junk, beyond the sea of low quality mass produced woodworking equipment. The companies name is fitting. Veritas. Truth.
When in college, while dirt poor, I use to get the Lee Valley catalogs and sit for hours on end neglecting homework thumbing through those beautiful catalogs. ...

The last two months or so, the shop has been a mess. Partly this is due to not having a place to put all of my lumber but the bigger part is I have had no place to put the larger equipment. Recently in one of the woodworking magazines they built a shop cabinet that housed the same type equipment I was trying to organize. They built it with spruce and peg board. I had some left over melamine (melamine that just happened to match all of the other cabinets in the shop) so I went to work with a d...
