Murphey Bed building #1: Murphey Bed

1975 days ago by prez | 2 comments »

Well, I’ve started my project. Got some poplar boards cut up today and after some final words of wisdom from my assistant in the shop (see photos) I assembled the base for the bed. Now I have to wait for the plywood to arrive from my lumber store. My assistant will be back tomorrow to check out my work. http://picasaweb.google.com/sicordg/MurpheyBed?authkey=BbTHjroAieQ&feat=directlink Stay tuned…. I think this is going to be fun…

Wild Oregon Cherry Art Print Bin

1975 days ago by David | 8 comments »

I just completed the art print bin being built for The Clearwater Gallery in Sisters, Oregon. This was a commissioned piece to hold shrink-wrapped art prints in the gallery. The owners felt that a wooden print bin would fit the character of the gallery better than a commercial steel bin. Music to this woodworker’s ears! Completed Print Bin The design was worked out with SketchUp and finalized with a mock-up built with pine and MDF using a Kreg Jig and pocket screw joinery. The ...

Hide Glue #2: Hide Glue Primer

2003 days ago by David | 15 comments »

I am interested in hide glue for a number of reasons. The first of which is the “romance” of using a traditional method that has its foundations as far back as Ancient Egypt and the cabinet shops of Colonial America. I also appreciate the pace of using hide glue . . . slow while getting set-up and quick when applying the glue. I also like the reversibility of hide glue and the fact that it accepts stain and finish without leaving telltale glue marks like that pesky spot of PVA ...

A really tough client this time!

2027 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 40 comments »

Well I think I met my match! My current wife, ( I”m considering trading her in), always says I never build anything for her, or as she would say US. (yeah right). A while back our projection screen television committed suicide. So we bought a flat screen model that hangs on the wall. Of course all the “stuff” that used to sit on top of the previous T.V. cabinet was demoted to sitting on the floor. Thus, the need for a cabinet to sit below the new unit, and house the...

Neil Lamens interviews famed marquetuer Silas Kopf

2079 days ago by David | 7 comments »

This entry is a quick heads up regarding another great video interview by Neil Lamens. Neil & Gigi recently went on a road trip to East Hampton, MA to visit the famed marquetuer Silas Kopf. During the video interview, Silas made of a tulip that Neil “wove” in and out of the discussion. Silas took Neil on a shop tour and introduced us right hand and cabinetmaker Tom Coughlin. While discussing a current cabinet in production, Neil and Silas talk about traveling to visit hi...

Refinishing a Dining Room Table

2105 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 2 comments »

Oddly, I have lived for the last couple of years or more without a dining room table. We have utilized a fold-out picnic table for the purpose of this necessity, though we rarely eat at home anyway (anyone want to have us over for dinner?). We used to have a dining room table. We bought an excellent bargain at an antique sale – it was an old-ish appearing oaken table about 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. It had some very heavy, solid members of 8/4 stock – presumably White Oak....
