Handplanes #3: Fore play ...err... Fore plane that is.

94 days ago by PurpLev | 23 comments »

While working on building my workbench, I ended up breaking the Y part that is responsible for blade advancement (in/out) in my Buck-Bros #5 Jack plane. This one was probably one of my very first woodworking tools that I still have today, and with it I learned much about hand planing from proper tuning, to usage. As it happened, a day after It broke, I found a Stanley #6 fore plane on craigslist, and as luck had it – the guy was a few streets away from me. NICE. I figured I’m g...

MsDebbieP's Company Tours #3: Lee Valley, Part II

845 days ago by MsDebbieP | 23 comments »

(continued from Lee Valley Interview, part I) Following my interview with Robin Lee, President of Lee Valley, I took my Canadian Film Crew with me as I headed to my “local” Lee Valley Store, which is just an hour away, for my very first public appearance as MsDebbieP, the Canadian LumberJock. The weather was the hottest that we’ve had all summer and, boy oh boy, was the hat and coat ever hot! Inside, Don Riley, the store manager, gave me a tour, starting with the warehouse area i...

Learning Curve #16: Router Phobia

783 days ago by MsDebbieP | 22 comments »

Today I decided to put new dividers in my kitchen drawer and so down to the workshop I went. Earlier this week I had purchased some 1/2” x 6” knotty pine at Rona. I thought that the 1/2” was too narrow to use the DowelMax on and so I chose to use a different joinery technique. Using the router is out—I’ve had too many difficulties with the machine and I’m not familiar enough with the Triton router to give that a go without some assistance from Rick (who ...

MsDebbieP's Company Tours #2: Lee Valley

845 days ago by MsDebbieP | 17 comments »

Well, MsDebbieP is at it again! Adding to her shop tours and inspections are visits to companies that support woodworkers! Last week I had the privilege of speaking with Robin Lee, President of Lee Valley, one of our Summer Woodworking Awards sponsors. Mr. Lee, heading the family business that was first started by his father Leonard Lee, carries on the family vision of providing quality customer service by “doing what is right” and by “making people happy”. This underlying goal can be f...

Bowling Alley Workbench #7: Moving forward at 0mph

136 days ago by PurpLev | 6 comments »

It’s interesting how it feels like you’re standing still when you’re working on already dry-fit parts for additional features. After all – at the end of the day when you look at all the parts – they seem to look just the way they did in the morning. bummer. but even though things don’t seem that way somethings. Progress IS progress, and is one step closer to the finish line. Today I implemented the hardware for the leg vise in the right leg (I’m...

Handplanes #2: Cap Iron, and Lever Cap Positioning

98 days ago by PurpLev | 5 comments »

Hi, I’ve seen these questions raised on several threads, and for many years didn’t know the answer to these myself. I just stumbled upon the “answers” which reminded me of the questions, so I figured I’d post it here for anyone that might be able to use it. I stumbled upon these on Lee-Valley website which is a golden fountain of knowledge if you know how to find it (some of their articles and tips are not visible, nor easy to come upon unless you stumble upon...

Woodworkers Help Save the Children #3: Ready, Set, GO!

783 days ago by Martin Sojka | 4 comments »

It took some time to finish all the details… but now it’s time to say it loud: We’re ready to go! I’ve prepared dedicated event's page where you can find all of the details (you can also find the link by clicking on the STICKIES in the header). And Debbie has included official event’s announcement in today's eMag issue. As you can see we have moved the deadline to January 1st, 2008 so there is one extra month for everybody who wants to participate. Plus...
