Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK.

I have had so many positive comments and feedback on the Celtic Knot Rolling Pin. Thank you for all of them. Many LumberJocks asked for instructions on how they are made- so here goes. I am a fan of “Cook Book” style instructions so if I miss any details, please let me know and I will try to flesh them out.

Overview
There are a number of people who have indicated they would like to know more about what it takes to turn pens. There are quite a few very good pen turners who are members of our community. My intent is go get an overview out there to encourage more people to give it a try. I’m hoping some of the other pen turners will add to this and we can get more people turning. It really is quite simple and very rewarding.

I have had several people ask me how I turn a hollow form. I documented, the best I could, the process I go through when making a hollow form vase. I found it difficult stopping and photographing the process. Documenting the process became a process all in itself.
The first step is selecting the wood and marking the centers. I then mount the blank on the lathe between the spur drive and the live center.

Until recently my lathe experience has been 50 or so pen/pencils, a few miniature goblets, and a couple small 5 inch bowls over the past few years on a Jet mini lathe, enough to want to try other lathe work. This past fall I was fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire a PM 3520B, but due to other work and priorities I’ve not had a lot of time to use it yet…and that’s “killing me”.

This is my first attempt at turning green wood. I have been encourage and coached by a friend and new Lumberjock, Terry. I roughly turned the blank into the shape I wanted. I left the wall thickness approximately 10% of the bowl diameter. I may have left a little too much? After turning the bowl inside and out, I submerged it in denatured alcohol. I will let it soak for 24 – 36 hours, flash the alcohol off for 2 -3 hours, wrap it in a brown paper grocery bag, date it, and allow it to dr...

Hi Folks,
WayneC posted a great blog entry on Turning a Pen with outstanding instruction and resources. Using Wayne’s blog and resources, I started turning a few pens and have found a lot of enjoyment in a quick little project in the shop. I have limited shop time and while I stall on a large entertainment centre as a feature in our home theatre, as well as trying to find the time for the summer entries, I’ve been spending some quality time with my lathe.

Hey everyone,
I was asked by a few of you from my blog “How to find legal burls” “once I get them how do I cut the burls”?
Well I just made a short vidio on how I cut to the burl in the context of a bowl or hollow form blank.

This second part will concentrate on the layout of the rolling pin blank in preparation for cutting the slots. Create a blank that is 22” long and 2” square.
