Hi Folks,
WayneC posted a great blog entry on Turning a Pen with outstanding instruction and resources. Using Wayne’s blog and resources, I started turning a few pens and have found a lot of enjoyment in a quick little project in the shop. I have limited shop time and while I stall on a large entertainment centre as a feature in our home theatre, as well as trying to find the time for the summer entries, I’ve been spending some quality time with my lathe.
With the help of ...

Hi Folks,
Here’s the final in the bowl turning series. Finishing cuts, some sanding (ooo, that’s fun to watch) and applying a finish. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. In upcoming videos, I’ll go through turning tools, sharpening, and chucking options.
Cheers!

To date, the most time I’ve spent at the lathe was 3 hours – and that was in a small classroom setting practing beads and coves – 1/2 the time playing and getting a feel for the tools, and the rest of the time trying to make deliberate shapes – while contantly dealing with catches.
Today, I began working on my wood joinery/garden project. 1 hour of planning and cutting, 4 hours straight at the lathe! Also to date, the longest things I’ve turned came in around ...

This is my second attenpt at wet bowl turning after gathering valuable advice from a forum topic calling on bowl turners.
Special thanks to Dorje, Mot (and his excellent CyberSkillShare series on bowl turning) and a very detailed and helpful tutorial by a fairly new member of LJs, SteveRussell (he isn’t new to bowl turning by any means, and I believe we haven’t heard the last from him in terms of sage advice).
This is the second and largest log section from a sweet haul of b...

Hi Folks,
Welcome to the first installment of the Lumberjocks.com Cyber Skill Share. Please read the Lumberjocks Forum for information on this concept, sit back, and turn the bottom of a bowl. This series will also include hollowing, sanding, finishing, turning tools, and some sharpening.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated as we, the lumberjocks community, refine this concept!
Thanks!
Tom

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS.
On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting.
I started the project with the previous blog: http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/decoustudio/blog/1508
Also, since I had enough in...

In this part I’m intending to finish the cigar pen I started last time. I’m going to add a bloodwood accent to the writing end of the pen.
To do this I took a bloodwood scrap and drilled the center. I then took a spare brass tube put it on the pen mill and squared one end to the hole. This allows the part to mate seamlessly to the piece on the tube.
Next is cut off a short piece to glue onto the tube. I am using a clamp to keep my fingers away. I probably could hav...

Overview
There are a number of people who have indicated they would like to know more about what it takes to turn pens. There are quite a few very good pen turners who are members of our community. My intent is go get an overview out there to encourage more people to give it a try. I’m hoping some of the other pen turners will add to this and we can get more people turning. It really is quite simple and very rewarding.
What I like about turning pens is the ability to finish a ...
