How to find and harvest legal burls!

46 days ago by OregonBurls | 32 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

turnings #11: first hollow-form failure update - major checking!

83 days ago by Gary Fixler | 31 comments »

Just an update on this post. When I left off, it looked like this: I took a week’s hiatus – no motivation – and upon returning to the garage (last Sunday), I found this: Note it goes right to the pith, as every check I’ve seen in any log, branch, or twig in which I’ve noticed any checking does. This is why so many people remove the pith entirely from their blanks, and why pith-in end-grain turnings can be a bit of a craps shoot. Note that thi...

Making A Segmented Ring Without A Lathe / A Step by Step Tutorial

173 days ago by scrappy | 29 comments »

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK. Here goes; Wood Selection The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...

screwdriver #1: Admit it, fix it, and move on... (now with pix!)

1000 days ago by scottb | 29 comments »

First the bad news, just after my Bro-in law rec’d his homemade 6-in-1 mahogany screwdriver for christmas (and my nephew asked if he was really going to use it) it broke. Apparently the fact that I made it was a miracle, as I misjudged and left the wall closest to the business end very thin. First attempt was only a success in working out all the details in getting it on the lathe, and then off in one piece. Another second and It would have exploded on me. Like any good customer ...

Lathest Addition to the Shop...

755 days ago by Dorje | 26 comments »

My wife bought me this Jet 1642 EVS lathe last month…I love it! She really likes bowls – thank goodness! She didn’t think that I should get the 14”er that I had been planning on for the past year or so… The first day that I went out to play (set it up and turn it on), it wouldn’t run! Turns out that it wouldn’t run off of the GFI circuit that runs to the shop…I had to run a new standard circuit out there from the panel in the house ̵...

Turning a Pen

850 days ago by mot | 25 comments »

Hi Folks, WayneC posted a great blog entry on Turning a Pen with outstanding instruction and resources. Using Wayne’s blog and resources, I started turning a few pens and have found a lot of enjoyment in a quick little project in the shop. I have limited shop time and while I stall on a large entertainment centre as a feature in our home theatre, as well as trying to find the time for the summer entries, I’ve been spending some quality time with my lathe. With the help of ...

Teaching a 6 year old to turn #1: Introduction

612 days ago by Alin Dobra | 22 comments »

Vlad, my (almost) 6 year old son’s biggest dream since I started woodturning is to learn how to turn. I build a work table for him 1 year ago and bought him a handplane but I convinced him at the time that he is too small for woodturning. I did promise though that we will try woodturning when he turns 6. A month ago he reminded me of the deal and asked if the small Jet lathe will be his. Over the weekend I decided to give it a try with Vlad even though he is not 6 years old yet. I...
